Footy Furnace

That’s what people want to see on Sunday mornings though (seemingly).

This

I’m not so sure on this.

Given that highlights of the show are already on twitter before airing on Nine, and pretty sure that’s been with a game still in progress, it could still be the same again.

The 2 problems I have with Footy Furnace are:
So much emphasis on player trades, its not even 2 months in to a season, stop speculating about next year and beyond,

Also, I kind of get the feeling this is just a vehicle to try and raise Tom Morris’ profile as their football chief reporter or whatever the title is.
“Come join Nine, we’ll give you a title, a special green screen for all your news crosses, and your own show”.

Also airing the same the following week. Seems like a permanent thing now.

It didn’t air last night according to 9Now website.

The next episode will stream on 9Now this Sunday at 8pm AEST.

I guess it’s because there were no Men’s games last weekend.

If Nine were really committed to AFL, it would’ve been on lat night to cover AFLW, along with finals for the state competitions.

Was Sunday Footy Show on yesterday?

Leigh Matthews will be parting ways with Channel 9 after one year at the network, according to the Herald Sun. Tonight will be his final appearance on Footy Furnace.

At this point it will just be Eddie and Tom Morris doing all three shows next year

In all seriousness, is there something going on with GTV or Nine crew/management that is influencing all these decisions? Maybe the new Chairperson and CEO and other executives have taken a different view to previous of AFL programming on the non-rights holder/NRL network, including from the latter’s HQ? It all seems a bit odd, regardless of Seven and Foxtel looking for new talent with a new broadcast deal from 2025.

I’m guessing most would want to be on a broadcaster that actually has the rights, since they would get the most eyeballs.

I think Nine are still committed to footy programming - Eddie described Nine the other night as ‘football’s away ground’, but there has been some concern that executives were ‘asleep at the wheel’ earlier this year when they didn’t formally provide new contracts to the likes of Caro and Kane, allowing Seven to swoop.

Ultimately I think for the likes of Cornes, the opportunity to commentate on a live-match broadcast was too good to refuse. There is also some speculation that Matthew Lloyd will join Fox Footy next year (similarly, to commentate live on games on TV), however he seems very loyal to Channel 9 so we’ll have to wait and see where that one ends up.

Could it be that the Sydney based-executives, who probably control the network finances, and may not see much point in having extensive AFL content on a network that doesn’t have the rights, were looking for a way to pay less for all of these big names, especially with Nine doing cost-cutting?

I thought OnAir or someone the other day said this really shouldn’t factor into things for them?

Could they come to an agreement, remain at Nine just for a show or two and fully otherwise be at Foxtel’s disposal? Given STV vs FTA (not like it’s Fox Footy vs 7AFL or Seven vs Nine). With a mention of “courtesy Fox Footy” or something. Like Eddie McGuire remained at Nine, but also used to host Fox Footy.

Fair enough, however, there would definitely be more opportunities (i.e. be involved in match-day coverage, etc), and possibly have easier access to the big name players at a network which does have the rights.
