And Australia’s first clean sheet (keeping the opposition scoreless) since 1974! (against Peru in this 0-0 draw in Berlin)

After a 7-0 loss to Spain, Costa Rica have turned things around, upsetting Japan 1-0 in Doha. Keysher Muller scored a goal in the 82nd minute of the match to give them a chance of victory. Costa Rica have to win over Germany if they want to make the ROund of 16, However, the Goal Difference is very low. This could depend on other results.

Four more teams have qualified for the round of 16 in this year’s World Cup.

In Group A, Netherlands beat Qatar 2-0 (thus ensuring the host finishing its campaign without a single point) while Senegal defeated Ecuador 2-1. The Dutch topped the group with Senegal second. It’s the first time since 2002 that Senegal qualified for the knockout stages.

In Group B, England easily accounted for Wales 3-0, with Marcus Rashford scoring a double, and USA edged out Iran 1-0. England finished on top of the group with USA second.

Australia are through to the round of 16 of World Cup, beating Denmark 1-0 thanks to a 60th minute strike by Matthew Leckie. It’s the first time in World Cup history that the Socceroos won consecutive games. Leckie’s goal sparked another round of wild celebrations at Melbourne’s Federation Square.

The Socceroos qualified even though Tunisia stunned reigning champions France 1-0 in the same group.

France finished first in Group D on a superior goal difference while Socceroos finished second in the group, and will face Argentina next, after the latter beat Poland 2-0 in Group C. Saudi Arabia were eliminated after losing to Mexico 1-2. That Saudi goal in second half injury time also dashed Mexico’s qualifying hopes, ensuring Argentina would top the group followed by Poland (again on superior goal difference - Poland was 0 and Mexico was -1).

Good to see Socceroos make it to the Round of 16 for the first time since 26 June 2006 (where we lost to Italy during the Penalty Shootout.)

Graham Arnold haters are quaking in their boots

He deserves all the criticisms that he has gotten. We only just limped through qualification. I don’t think he should get a contract extension, no matter what he’s done at this World Cup (unless we get through and win the whole thing).

Never assume anything…that’s my motto!

I am not an association football*** fan but glad to see us progress…it’s a bit like Scotland in the cricket I guess. Good luck to them, but I’d be very surprised to see us trouble our snowier Southern hemisphere counterparts in the next game (but again, never assume anything).

***The term ‘soccer’ is a kind of slang for association football. I only realised that recently, d’oh.

More upsets at the World Cup with the elimination of world No.2 Belgium and former champion Germany.

In Group E, Belgium needed to defeat Croatia in order to progress to the round of 16, but could only draw 0-0. Morocco beat Canada 2-1 and topped the group, followed by Croatia.

In Group F, Germany came from 1-2 down in the second half to beat Costa Rica 4-2, however Japan’s 2-1 victory over Spain means Japan finishing on top of the group with Spain second.

The group stage of the World Cup ended this morning. Brazil topped Group G despite a shock 1-0 loss to Cameroon in second half added time. Cameroon captain Vincent Aboubakar was issued a second yellow card and sent off for wild goal celebrations where he took his shirt off after scoring the winning goal. Brazil would be joined in the round of 16 by Switzerland, which defeated Serbia 3-2.

In Group H, South Korea pulled off a miracle escape, securing a 2-1 victory over Portugal in second half injury time, with both advancing to the knockout stages at the expense of Uruguay, despite the latter scoring two goals in the first half to beat Ghana.
