Massive ratings for Australia’s 2-1 loss to France last night. Although exact figures won’t be posted until Monday, they are way above the Socceroos’ first group match at the past two World Cups.
2010: Germany v Australia 1,106,000
2014: Chile v Australia 714,000

Brilliant ratings, excellent coverage by SBS. Can only imagine how one of the other networks would’ve fucked up the coverage. Well done to SBS. Shame they sold off most of the tournament.

Is that the first time SBS has won the ratings?

First time in 2018.

What about when they had the rights to the 2005 Ashes?

Check out the MediaWeek Aus Twiter feed. Let’s just say they doubled the next highest rating program (7 News), and they had a share that’s you would associate with the Seven Network on a normal winning night.

Meanwhile, other countries are offering 4k streaming. We can’t even do 4k broadcasting let alone streaming.

HD is pushing the limits in this country so Optus probably shouldn’t take all the blame.

Edit: HDR too! Surprised no one in Australia has tried it out, even if in vain.

More bad publicity.
SBS need to keep their rights in Qatar 2022 and not do another deal with Optus. It’s a disaster. It’s a relatively cheap $15 for the month but still I cannot really be bothered subscribing.

Fox sports bashing Optus as usual… trying to position themselves as superior and that they should have the rights. So arrogant

Hmm OK, I’m getting issues with Fetch tonight.

Are Optus going to use that excuse every night?

They need to cut their losses and offer free coverage. This is a disaster.

This has become a farcical situation - it’s clear Optus weren’t prepared to deal with the demands which the World Cup would place on their streaming infrastructure from an viewing and traffic perspective. Additionally, it’s obvious they have no idea a) what the issues they’re having actually are nor b) how to resolve them

Just discovered a way to somewhat get around the Optus issue. If you download the SBS World Cup app and enter your Optus Sport details, the stream works. However, you can’t hook it up to the TV.

SBS execs must be cringing at their decision

But I don’t think that would actually solve anything apart from the battering customer service would be getting. It’d just be a free black screen.

Is it too early to suggest we might see Optus hand off their exclusive rights to SBS? This cannot go on much longer.
