FIFA World Cup 2018

Of course, SBS had the ability to pick and choose whichever game they wanted each day. Understand this one is in prime time but they could have already chosen it.

Next week SBS will have to pick which matches they will televise. Group A, B, E, F, G and H are yet to be determined. However, the SBS network will still televise the Denmark v Australia match during the midnight.

Naturally, they chose the match with more perceived interest (England) around 3:30am.

But I disagree, Aussies want FTA World Cup action, any action! There’ll be lots watching at 10pm, SBS have the timeslot to themselves. At least 600k I’d think

These are the games to be shown on SBS in the next 48 hours and whether they are new additions to their schedule.

Monday, June 18

Group F Sweden v Korea Republic LIVE from 9.40pm* on SBS (kick-off 10pm*) NEW

Tuesday, June 19

Group G Belgium v Panama LIVE from 12.45am* on SBS (kick-off 1am*) NEW
Group G Tunisia v England LIVE from 3.30am* on SBS (kick-off 4am*)
Group H Colombia v Japan LIVE from 9.30pm* on SBS (kick-off 10pm*)

Wednesday, June 20

Group H Poland v Senegal LIVE from 12.45am* on SBS (kick-off 1am*) NEW
Group A Russia v Egypt LIVE from 3.45am* on SBS (kick-off 4am*) NEW

Next game after the 48 hours is 9.30pm Portugal v Morocco - LIVE kick-off 10pm, already in the SBS schedule.

If Optus gets the rights to the UEFA Champions League, as well as Italian, German & Spanish football rights, then Bein Sports Australia might as well shut up shop then.

While Optus’ broadcast debacle continues, there is another serious World Cup broadcast issue developing on the other side of the world. FIFA is considering legal action against Saudi Arabia’s BeoutQ, claiming it is showing the tournament illegally. Qatar-based BeIN Sports hold the World Cup TV rights for Middle East, but due to Saudi Arabia’s trade blockade of Qatar which began last year, Saudi fans are not able to watch BeIN Sports, instead they were given access to the BeoutQ feed which illegally offers the same content available on BeIN Sports.

There’s a really good NY Times article about that which is well worth a read

Pre match conferences for Colombia v Japan

Holy fuck they’re salty. maybe instead of being snarky, they should spend more time helping customers. SBS being classy and not throwing shade at Optus, where SBS could go all Pusha T/Chief Keef on them and ruin them.

This was meant to be fixed for Saturday evening and look what’s happening, still shithouse for some customers and I doubt they’ll get it back working fully by the 48 hour deadline.

Anyone else thinking that Optus might just have to give it all back to SBS?

They should to salvage their brand. Their brand is so toxic at the moment.

No, because it probably means unwinding the agreement between Optus and SBS, so SBS will have to give up its rights to show one EPL match per week. Optus needs to persist with this World Cup but the telco should have seen this mess coming. It had months to set up infrastructure and do rehearsals to sort out potential problems.

A new arrangement for the EPL has not been made. The previous deal has expired.

They could show 3 channels of women’s tennis. Me and the 5 other fans would be happy

Women’s tennis is the only tennis worth watching!

The Optus/SBS EPL deal still has a season to run

For 2022, SBS should look into sharing that year’s World Cup with Nine.

Nine will not have any sport between November and December 2022 with Test cricket between AUS and SA on Seven under the new rights deal. This works in the UK with BBC and ITV sharing the rights. The Final can be shown on both SBS and Nine.
