We don’t seem tp complain when Australia plays dirty in cricket with sledging etc - we do whatever it takes to win there, exactly like England did last night.
That is true, but at the same time we don’t expect them to support us when we play other teams either ![]()
Trying to bring their trash from mens soccer to the family friendly atmosphere of womens sport
England and Sweden play a very aggressive, defensive flavour of football, at least in all the matches I’ve seen at this WC. In contrast to Japan and Spain, who play what is much closer to the beautiful game. Shame Japan went home when they did. Australia did well to advance so far, But I guess that’s in your anthem eh?
On this, and this is not exactly directly related, but I thought that the mood of last night vs let’s say the end of the 3rd Ashes test this year was a total contrast.
Was there disappointment in what happened last night? Absolutely (and yours truly was one of those disappointed). Are we still proud of the Matildas? Hell yeah! Did England play better last night? As much as I hate to admit it, yes simply on the fact that they had such a strong defence that the Matildas just couldn’t get through.
Apart from a few numpties in Melbourne that threw flares, I thought most of the reactions across Australia was one of good sports and recognition that the Matildas gave it their all and did an amicable job. Certainly better than the old, white and angry poms at Lord’s who ruined the aftermath of the 3rd test when Australia won.
And, if nothing else, at least we beat the Americans?
Today I feel Spain.
Yeah but it was still the “Women’s Football World Championship” or the like back then. Will be much more like the men’s WC now and rotate a lot more (but less of the sports washing for a little longer). So we won’t see this return for 20 years at least. Men’s Club World Cup in 2029(?) or the next, and Men’s World Cup for 2034/38.
Had we been in the final, Spain would be too strong for us. Best team in the comp and are my pick to win it all
And to think what they could be if they had a coach that was wanted! This is essentially an un-coached team that is already superb!
wdym? This was a great atmosphere! If you wanted to sit on the ground and clap at the goals then go to AAMI, people who thought they were going to Fed Square to watch the game and not be with the most passionate of fans then they obviously had never seen the place during any of the other games or Qatar before!
There’s no need for flares, nor kindergarten-level “ultras” like behavour.
The problem with football/ soccer in Australia is that it doesn’t have the product to sustain a significant level of interest. The A-League or W-League hasn’t created it. Overseas competitions like the English Premier League don’t either.
Seeing the Socceroos or Matildas play a few times a year (outside of World Cups) isn’t enough.
Until they can get A-League/ W-League to that level, then AFL/NRL and cricket will be what our sporting fixes are because they provide regular high quality contests that can sustain interest.
It’s due to these flare-throwing people that the Victorian Government today axed Federation Square as a live site for Saturday’s Australia v Sweden match and Sunday’s Spain v England final.
Seems that Fed Square is the only live site with flare issues. I haven’t read of flares being thrown at other live sites in regional Victoria or in other states.
Why punish the fans when security contracts should be the ones changed, they seemingly can’t do their job. Why, when FIFA have rented out Fed Square, is there not proper temp fencing around the area and a security checkpoint akin to a stadium? Poor planning has led to this disgusting and football-bashing decision. Always find a way to stop the growth of the game does the AFL…
Matildas defender Ellie Carpenter has been forced to limit her social media replies after copping a string of abuse in the wake of Australia’s loss to England.
It later emerged Carpenter turned off comments on her personal Instagram due to a flood of abuse, although she had plenty of fans voicing their support.
Unfortunately there’s a small minority of people out there, who often find their way onto social media, who are little more than grubs.

Kennedy took several knocks in that game and notably clashed heads with France striker Eugenie Le Sommer.
