Sweden defeated Australia 2-0 tonight at Brisbane Stadium. The Swedes opened the scoring through a 30th minute penalty, then added the second goal in the 62nd minute through captain Asllani. It is the fourth time Sweden finish third in the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The Matildas come fourth, Australia’s best finish in a FIFA World Cup (men and women).

I know the Matildas and their fans will disappointed right now after coming so close, but they’ve had a great tournament and can hold their heads up high, as they’ve created a legacy for women’s sport in Australia.

Well done Matildas.

…back in 2019.

Spain are world champions of women’s football for the first time. They beat England 1-0 in the final in Sydney tonight, to become the only fifth nation to claim the World Cup title, to add to their U17 and U20 world titles they won last year. Spanish captain Olga Carmona scored the only goal in the 29th minute.

Spain also earned a penalty in the middle of second half when Keira Walsh was adjudged to have handled the ball, but Jennifer Hermoso’s shot was saved by England goalkeeper Mary Earps.

For England manager Sarina Wiegman, it was her second consecutive loss in the World Cup final, after leading Netherlands to the 2019 final.

These awards were given at the conclusion of the tournament.
Golden Ball: Aitana Bonmati (Spain)
Golden Boot: Hitana Miyazawa (Japan, 5 goals)
Golden Glove: Mary Earps (England, three clean sheets)
FIFA Young Player Award: Salma Paralluelo (Spain)
FIFA Fair Play Award: Japan

Spain were definitely the better team and deserved the win.

Absolutely. What didn’t help the Matildas on Wednesday was their defence which allowed England to get through for shots. Spain on the other hand kept the pressure on and England really didn’t have a chance.

Spain was also excellent sports in this contest and their win is well-deserved. I’m sure a lot of Matildas fans must be rejoicing at the moment too.

Well, it’s not coming home then!

Agree, I think Matildas fans would have felt worse if the team that knocked them out had gone on to win (regardless of them being the “old enemy”).

Another reason I thought Spain deserved the win was that not only did they play a skilful game, but because they played by the rules (even though they did get one yellow card, it wasn’t intentional) and they played, well football.

England in the 2nd half I could see was getting desperate and started playing dirty with some of their tactics. Even if they did emerge with a win, I don’t think a lot of people will be impressed by some of their antics tonight.

Spain becomes only the second country to have won both men’s and women’s World Cups, after Germany.

Germany won back-to-back women’s titles in 2003 and 2007, and men’s World Cup in 1954, 1974, 1990 and 2014.

Spain won men’s World Cup in South Africa in 2010.

Only two players have scored in a senior World Cup Final for Spain: Andrés Iniesta in 2010 and Olga Carmona in 2023!
