FIFA Women's World Cup 2023

Is everyone hanging out Aussie flags on their doors, fences and balconies on Wednesday?

The Triple M Melbourne was calling the AFL clash between Carlton and Melbourne while the penalty shootout took place. Cortnee Vine’s spot kick came at quarter time.

I listened to 3AW’s call for updates while going home from a family dinner.

Sounds about right

Prediction for Wednesday Semi Final.

England claim they “morally” won. The @TheMatildas actually win 2-1.

Monday, Tuesday don’t hang about. Lessgo!!!#TheMatildas

With massive local ratings, and stadiums being filled to the brim. I hope FIFA consider Australia for the next Men’s World Cup.

Sydney wasn’t really taken seriously the last time they bid.

While I would like to see Australia to host a men’s World Cup, the sheer number of matches (104) means it’s impossible for the country to do it alone. Firstly, there are not enough stadiums that satisfy FIFA specifications and can share the matches. Secondly, it will require co-operation from the AFL and NRL to suspend their competitions in order for the World Cup to take place within a month.

The next step for Australia should be lodging a bid to host the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup. The tournament will be held at Saudi Arabia this December, and then in USA in 2025.

An expanded competition is going to make it hard for Australia to host it solo and it’s going to need some serious cooperation from the likes of the NRL and AFL if we’re serious about hosting.

There was talk of an “Asia-Pacific” hosted tournament that would also involve NZ, Malaysia and Singapore

Huh?

Canada-USA-Mexico World Cup is in 2026 and the one after that will be 2030.

There was a plan for Australia to co-host with New Zealand and Indonesia. That plan fell through but now there is talk it may be Australia-New Zealand-Singapore-Malaysia.

Right back at you - Johnson’s talking about the club world cup

I see.

Correct. Australia hosting the Club World Cup means the A-League champions will be able to participate without having to qualify through the AFC Champions League.

There was an instance where the crowd booed the refs after a Mackenzie Arnold penalty save was legitimately overturned because her feet weren’t on the goal line.

I really hope there’s some incident next game that exposes the utter hypocrisy of Australians and England win. The tears and meltdown will be hilarious on Twitter especially by people who like to snark on England.

That’s just the game of sports.

If this was in England and England’s goalkeeper was given the same ruling you can bet the Poms will be coming at the refs with pitchforks and torches.

BTW, where were you when the English threw a hissy fit over an umpiring decision in the Ashes about a month ago?

tad late on my congrats - happened to be on a train and every single person, young and old, had heads down at their phones and that last 30min what pulsating, scintillating stuff

It comes across as exaggerated, but truly can’t quite recall a night in Australian sporting history like what we’ll be witnessing this Wednesday (regardless of result and if victorious boy oh boy!) We love our sport, especially ‘event sport’, as seen from the passionate hype surrounding various Olympics, Winter Olympics, Comm Games, Australian Opens, Worlds Cups of multiple codes and so on. But in a time of rapidly changing landscapes, in more ways than one, including cost of living and cultural shifts, as well as following COVID/lockdowns and piggybacking recent sporting success at a few of the aforementioned events, the nation has come together to celebrate, it’s got pure national appeal with so much positivity none of that bickering and what have you sometimes seen even with Olympics and pressure from scribes and all (save for other codes this week attempting to have their two cents) and while no 26 million will not be watching, the lions share of of screen and/or sport viewers will be glued to the green and gold. Savour this moment, like we did with recent events, as we don’t know when we’ll see all of the above figures (team performance/crowds/ratings/buzz) again.

Go you good things :green_circle: :yellow_circle: :australia:

2030 could be an Iberian bid or a South American bid

UnAustralian.

I don’t know how true the below is, but some commentary on Twitter/X about the blockers that participation in football (soccer) faces in this country compared to larger codes like AFL

Nova 100’s Ben, Liam and Belle this morning spoke to Nico, who was on that Emirates flight from Dubai to Melbourne. He said it was a great atmosphere in the plane with the flight attendant providing beers to passengers. He said that even with the headphones on, he could still hear deep breaths from other passengers as each player prepared for her spot kick.
