Fast Food/Takeaways and Restaurants

correct. they also own Krispy Kreme here after the failures of that initial launch

Drive throughs on suburban land are cheaper to build / operate and move more sales per sq footage than traditional stores

The same growth is happening in North America and Uk expansions Of Starbucks and other coffee chains

They’re also not competing against traditional local coffee chains here. I could see Starbucks working on highways and freeways throughout the Australian market. Maybe that’s where they see the opportunity.

Aren’t Zarraffas and Gloria Jeans also opening drive throughs? Zarraffas in particular

Zarraffas don’t have much of a presence outside of Queensland. I personally think they make better coffee than Starbucks or Gloria Jeans and I would definitely buy their cappuccinos if they had more stores in Sydney. I have to wait until i visit family in Brisbane.
As per Gloria Jeans they aren’t as good. However i feel sorry for their franchisees the way Retail Food Group treats them. You would have thought they would have learnt over the last few years given the articles in the newspapers and ACA

They built one next to an existing 7/11 (used to be a Mobil Quix back in the day) in Werribee. Always a queue snaking out onto the road creating all sorts of traffic nightmares.

They’re also increasingly becoming co-located with other roadside retail as well which helps lower costs.

The new Maidstone store is the same. Only recently opened and you cannot get into the drive thru half the time with cars backed up onto the road. And the car park to go inside is impacted by the same drive thru queue when trying to either get a park, or get out of the park.

It’s very very poor planning.

There’s a Gloria Jeans Drive-Thru in Greenacre in Sydney. Felt like a coffee driving home past there one weekend afternoon a couple of months back. The massive lineup through the car park put me off that idea, so I went thru the nearby KFC instead!

Well, there are fewer and fewer around. There used to be one in every large suburb in Sydney. There are now only about a dozen coffee shops left.

Another Retail Food Group Disaster, seems like it was easier for them to mostly phase the GJs brand out rather than keep it going. Same thing happened to Michel’s Patisserie.

Only ones left in Perth are clearly in high traffic mall locations (and one drive thru near the airport mostly servicing FIFO clientle) and are therefore viable despite RFGs bullshit.

There is both a GJ and Michel’s in my local neighbourhood shopping centre. But yes i understand what you mean. Sure they have changed management but RFG and their associated brands still have a bad reputation but reading recent articles in the past year they still make it too difficult for franchisees to get out of contracts. Some being forced bankrupt as a result. I would have thought that the new management would have fixed this.

I’ve always received my meal at GYG in reasonable time. I find Taco Bell’s wait times are pretty long. About 20 mins before I got food.

A vegetarian mushroom and truffle pie from Victoria’s Rolling Pin Pies & Cakes bakery came out on top at the 2022 Australia’s Best Pie & Pastie Competition.

The controversial creation contains three types of mushroom, herbs and a truffle filling wrapped in a golden flaky pastry crust, with no meat in sight.

It’s the second year in a row the Rolling Pin Pies & Cakes bakery, which has stores in Queenscliff, Leopold and South Geelong, has taken out the top award.

Ive had Rolling Pin pies a number of times, they have won many awards and are good but they aren’t the best bakery in the area IMO, a bit over rated.

Just saw a post that Chicken Treat is expanding to the East Coast and seeking interest in ‘those wishing to own their own business’.

Won’t be the first time. They’ve been and gone in SA and QLD before, but seems that they’ve finally clicked that Oporto isn’t popular in all markets and that in some cases CT would do better.

Isn’t Chicken Treat similar to Red Rooster though? While Red Rooster stores are scattered across Melbourne, there are huge gaps between which provide great opportunity for new Chicken Treat outlets.

Similar, but aside from the basics the menus are quite different these days

Portuguese chicken burgers seem to be a bit of a Sydney specialty; I struggle to find them at independent takeaways even in Canberra. I pretty much have to go to Oporto for my fix. Compare this with suburban Sydney where just about every chicken shop does them.
