Think Courtney is really good but I’m undecided about Tony. There are times when I agree he sounds bored, but then there are other periods (seemingly depending on his interest in a performance) where a switch is flicked and his comments add to the broadcast.
I will say there is evident chemistry between the two.
The Finish jury judge actually said that if Finland did not win this year, there were five other acts with a Finnish connection (eg. singers, dancers, songwriters or lived in Finland) so they could still claim it.
Australia was one of 13 countries where the public gave Israel 12 points. Another 6 gave Israel 10 points. It was the number one country in the public voting.
I don’t know how you had that impression. Watched the final this afternoon and he was enjoying it and cracking jokes. He seemed enthusiastic to me. But remember, we did see all these acts in the semi finals and they have commented on them before, so there were no surprises.
This Israel vote is completely ruining the competition. At least last year they had a better song. This year it was a fizzer, completely forgettable and the 60 jury points were a fair score for it.
I don’t know a single Eurovision fan that rated this song. For perspective, Gojo’s ‘Milkshake Man’ has more streams on Spotify than Israel’s song, yet Israel had the biggest vote and we didn’t even qualify.
Most of the Israel votes are clearly from groups of people in countries that are doing it for complete patriotic/political reasons to try and prove something on the world stage. Most of them probably didn’t even watch or hadn’t even heard of Eurovision until last year.
This is a song contest and there has always been some politics but this was on another level. That’s probably 200 points taken away from other countries that deserved them. Some of the favourites like Finland and Sweden ranked surprisingly lower than odds indicated and this would be a big reason. If this keeps happening, people aren’t even going to want to compete anymore. There is going to be a boycott.
I never thought Sweden had a real chance of winning. It seemed more like novelty song than a serious entry. It’s one of those typical Eurovision songs you like to laugh at, but not take seriously.
write to your federal MP and get them to bring it up at Senate Estimates.
Eurovision pretty much matches the SBS brand and mission entirely, it ticks the boxes for multiculturalism, diversity, inclusion and supports local talent. And it has the added bonus of bringing in viewers and advertisers.
There are definitely legit reasons to question some of things SBS does and how well they sit in its charter. This is not one of them IMO.
