Early Evening Game shows

So it would be like the terrible 7 version of The Price Is Right from 10 years ago with all the cheap prizes from Big W.

“You’re the next contestant on The Price is Tight!”

Sale Of The Century’s original host Tony Barber has posted to Facebook video of the show’s first episode that aired on 14 July 1980 Watch Tony Barber on Opening Night Sale of the Century 14th July 1980 First Episode #gameshows #tonybarber #quizmaster #saleofthecentury #channel9 | By Tony Barber | Facebook

Interesting to see all these years later. I was probably watching that first episode, too!

Love the kisses and wolf whistles when the female presenter walks in… :joy:

Wow. Nice find. That was a blast from the past. I am glad that the first episode of Sale of the Century was found, and not deleted from the tapes.

30 minute nightly quiz shows on commercial tv since 2020 and beyond: non existent :frowning:

Pointless Australia was short lived and ended in May 2019. Prior to that, we had Family Feud, and Millionaire Hot Seat 30 min edition (until 2016).

I know tv has changed alot, but would Sale of the Century work on FTA these days?

As I’ve been known to muse from time to time, they need to bring back Temptation

Temptation with Ed Phillips and Livinia Nixon was great.

I wouldn’t mind seeing a local Jeopardy. The last time it was tried it was in the dreaded 6.00 timeslot on Ten. Doomed to fail.

Wish it lasted longer. Went for 2 seasons before being “rested” in 2008, returned in summer 2008/09 before being axed.

Ron Neate, SOTC’s original voiceover man, lasted 10 episodes before being replaced by Pete Smith.

That was very cool. Interesting to see the elements of the show that were there since episode 1… and also how parts evolved over time. I loved the grandeur of ‘Sale’ as the years went by. The booming music as the cash jackpot came down from the sky lol

Completely forgot about this one - Ed and Livinia competing on Temptation, with Tony Barber and Alyce Platt guest hosting (and a special appearance from Pete Smith!)

And the actual final of Temptation was on the Friday 23 January 2009 - at the oddly slot of 11.30am. Not sure if the rest of that week was at 11.30am, or the traditional slot of 7pm.

Why did it air at 11.30am? Cricket? Two and a Half Men more important to Nine at the time?

Rove was supposed to air a rebooted Blankety Blanks before it was too axed to make way for Grant Denyer’s version of Family Feud

The success of 2.5 Men at the 7pm time slot meant Temptation was axed

Ironically it was another sitcom, Frasier, do so well in repeats that saw them kill off the original Sale.

Here is a good database for Aussie game shows of yesteryear. So much memories

Gosh seeing these shows again is bringing back so many great memories. Tony B was so good as quizmaster.

I wish one of the networks would give this format another go. It’s really missed.

Sale was meant to come back in the latter half of 2002, but its replacement Shafted failed in the ratings and was replaced by Fraiser repeats.
