I was pondering that slightly yesterday when the “Nine News” on Magic referenced someone as speaking with “Channel 7” - that’s where they should pull out the callsign “Speaking with ATN”, just to minimise the free promotion.
Shouldn’t be done as an on air brand, but I think it’d be an amusing extension of trying to zoom out competitor watermarks and the like.
I think a better idea is (or would have been) to make it mandatory that network names are seen alongside channel names, whether it’s right next to the channel name in a smaller font or even part of a program’s synopsis window. This way you could have simplified channel names as well as more detailed channel info such as network, location and/or callsign.
For the record, a ‘network name’ already exists in the EIT on all digital broadcasts. It’s just that a lot of boxes don’t show it or it’s hard to find so it’s not very useful for an end user.
