On Friday, the company, led by the billionaire Elon Musk, cut the prices of the Model Y, a small SUV that is Tesla’s most popular model and the top-selling electric vehicle in the US, and also of the Models X and S, its older and more expensive models. Prices for the Model 3 sedan and the Cybertruck stayed the same.
The cuts reduced the starting price for a Model Y to $42,990, and to $72,990 for a Model S and $77,990 for a Model X.
Then on Saturday, Tesla slashed the US price of its “Full Self-Driving” driver assistant software from $12,000 to $8,000.
The cuts continued on Sunday, when Tesla cut the starting price of the revamped Model 3 in China by 14,000 yuan ($1,930) to 231,900 yuan ($32,000), its official website showed.
There were also price cuts in many other countries in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, a Tesla spokesperson said.
The swathe of price cuts comes after the company reported this month that its global vehicle deliveries in the first quarter had fallen for the first time in nearly four years.
Still can’t believe they’re allowed to advertise it as “full self-driving”. No wonder idiots are killing themselves taking naps in their cars on freeways. Where are the regulators?
It’s just a result of sheer failure to care about the actual market, and instead following Musk’s pet projects. A meme truck that’s poorly built when the F150/Silverado/RAM are all now available as EVs, sticking with large sedans as most of their lineup when the industry has moved on, and a cancelled car to meet the growing small EV market that BYD/KIA and others are going to destroy them in.
They had a head start in the market, but now the legacy manufacturers have caught up, and do stuff like round steering wheels and centre consoles with buttons, and truck beds that can fit stuff, and paint jobs that can go through car washes…
The biggest question is how long until the Tesla stock starts to actually look like “underperforming car company” rather than the “tech” bubble it has been in - which has been the only thing making Tesla look like a well performing company.
Have just done the East Coast drive in Tasmania from St Helens down to Port Arthur (and back to Hobart).
Lovely scenic drive, one of the nicest I’ve ever seen, up there with the Great Ocean Road in VIC - road surface mostly good too, but it’s a bit narrow and lacking in shoulders in most parts, even though it’s not as hilly as the Victorian road.
Tesla was always going to get over-run once the big car manufacturers got up to speed - they were really good tech wrapped in a so-so-designed and often poorly built vehicle.
Musk ignored everyone who said that there was a reason why the legacy manufacturers hadn’t automated their whole build processes and we saw the outcome.
They had a good run by being first to market, but now nearly every major manufacturer has an EV, Tesla will struggle to sell.
There will still be people that buy them because they are kind of like the iPhone of cars.
But smarter consumers should gravitate towards newer more cost effective alternatives like Kia, MG and BYD.
I got a Tesla about a year ago but at the time there were major delays getting new cars and the cheaper alternatives were Chinese based vehicles which I didn’t not want for various reasons. It seems that things have changed quite a bit since then and quicker than I thought and I am kind of regretting that decision now but overall I am happy with my Tesla.
Survey from toll company Who has an opinion on driving over a bridge and recommends the trip to other drivers?
Ahh, a Net Promoter Score survey - these should be fired into the sun
How’d you go on that stretch of the A3 next to the rock face near Orford?
It was a nice drive too! Liked how that was completely different to the rest.
The drive from Hobart to Strahan was very hilly, particularly as you got more than halfway across. But very scenic too.
Quite bizarre. The Go-Between bridge might be a useful link but it’s hardly worth a travel review . Best part of the bridge is it’s names after the local music legends.
Where did the accident occur? Is it a blackspot?
Oxley Rd, Sherwood.
Missed by that much!
Why do these idiot truck drivers try to drive under these rail overpasses? They should be aware of how high their truck is or look for an alternate route.
Lucky I wasn’t travelling to Wacol to the RSPCA today ,trains were suspended, they usually are after a bridge strike.I hope they’re resumed tomorrow as I’m going there then ,might have to drive instead
Looking at Google Maps, it is a narrow underpass too, similar to the one at Huntingdale Road in Mount Waverley in Melbourne’s east, near Jordanville railway station.
Will it be a good idea to rebuild the underpass with a greater height clearance and four-lane, two-way road?
Maybe they need to rebuild this overpass ,raise the height of it
Should be an immediate loss of license for these incidents - you have a responsibility to know the height of your vehicle, and you should have the attentiveness to the road to see a low clearance coming.
I suppose the flipside is, I don’t think any of the major mapping applications have an option to set a clearance height for a route - so I would assume people are being routed down roads with low clearances, but just like those people who drive into lakes, you need to observe your surroundings as well.
