Driving & Traffic

A male constable, 39, from the state’s north has been charged with manslaughter, causing grievous bodily harm and driving offences.

A woman and her husband, both aged in their 40s from New South Wales, were crossing the road when they were hit by a Tasmania Police car that had flipped and spun after colliding with another car on January 6.

The last stage of the Northlink project in WA opens today, which has been an enormous project that extended the Tonkin Hwy in Perth by 37km, effectively bypassing the metro area portion of an existing single carriageway national highway (Great Northern Highway) and is built to freeway standard the whole way. The reduction in travel times, especially from Ellenbrook have been significant (20-30 minutes).

The section of the freeway between Chandler Highway and Bulleen Road was reopened just after 4pm AEST, after it was closed for nearly 23 hours. That is the longest closure since the section was opened to traffic in December 1977.

Somehow they did it without tolls unlike Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.

Glad it’s finally opened. It ends 7 years of roadworks on Tonkin Highway from the Airport to Muchea first with the Gateway project and then Northlink, although work will start up again soon with the Tonkin Gap improvements and the Ellenbrook rail line.

Further south, there will be a flyover built at Hale Road and grade seperated interchanges at Welshpool and Kelvin Roads.

Tonkin now rivals Mitchell/Kwinana Freeway as the alternative major north south route in Perth.

I’m surprised it wasn’t tolled from Ellenbrook to Muchea given it runs parallel to Great Northern Highway and people could use that if they didn’t want to be charged.

The recall applies to 2007-2011 models of the popular i30 hatch and 2006-11 models of the Elantra sedan, as well 9393 Santa Fe SUVs built from March 2005 to September 2009.

Drivers have been warned against parking inside a garage or near anything flammable due to the risk of fire.

You’d think with cars mostly over 10 years old like these, any such instances of fire would have occurred by now.

Some of these old car problems are because the plastics degrade, exposing sensitve innards which were previously protected from the environment by the plastic.

It’ll also depend on how much some vehicles are driven, and in cases like this one, the weather where they’re parked.

I’m not entirely surprised that these cheap & nasty cars have issues; sometimes you get what you pay for (of course not everyone can afford a nice car, and it matters less if you don’t spend much time in the car).

The Illawarra traffic, the day after the lockdown restrictions eased.

Gee I wouldn’t call an i30 cheap and nasty.

I’d maybe check out how many times recent model Corollas and Mazda 3s have been recalled - a lot more than the i30.

I thought I’d get a look at the progress of the Albion Park Rail bypass works but you turned around. Plenty of cars heading south for the day.

That will make a big difference to the area when finished. A Nowra bypass looks a long way off, and is really needed too.

Up the other end of the state, looks like construction on the Coffs Harbour bypass still hasn’t started and won’t be completed until 2024. I thought the WHOLE Pacific Hwy upgrade was meant to be completed this year?

Yes, but that doesn’t include the Coffs Harbour bypass.

Even so, the Pacific Highway/Motorway will be entirely dual-carriageway from Sydney into QLD (with traffic lights at Beresfield, Hexham, Tomago, Heatherbrae & Coffs Harbour in between).

Also, Northconnex, a new toll motorway tunnel that will connect the M1 at Wahroonga with the M2 at West Pennant Hills, is set to open later this year. When completed, it will provide motorists a ā€œtraffic light freeā€ journey from Newcastle to as far as Canberra, Melbourne & Geelong.

You would’ve thought the horrific Grafton and Kempsey bus crashes in 1989 would be enough to spur the state and federal governments into action to get the dual carriageway completed, as recommended by the coroner. Fourteen years after the initial promised completion date it’s still nowhere near finished.

I was planning on continuing into Dapto but after seeing the traffic southbound I had to turn around.

Here’s the progress of the APR bypass on the East West Link:

Gee that M1 to M2 connection will be great but a long time coming! When I lived in Sydney in the mid to late 90s I actually couldn’t believe there wasn’t a traffic light free route from Newcastle through to south of Sydney.

Coming from Brisbane which had a continuous freeway from Sunshine Coast through Brisbane to the Gold Coast from the late 80s.

And now down to West Ballina.

I fear the Northconnex could be a disaster from the day it opens, as I don’t think it is wide enough. The M5 East tunnels were too narrow with only two lanes each way, and this new road will open with two lanes each way with a reserve for only one extra lane each way.

The M5 from Liverpool to Campbelltown and most of the M4 shows how nice wide roads generally work well. The M7 is too narrow, so a breakdown or slow vehicle can cause an instant bankup. The DMR/RTA/RMS over the decades has never learnt from its mistakes.
