Driving & Traffic

What on Earth, this would pollute our cities more. What we could had done instead is impose fuel rationing in the Metro Areas. I do not think that my Micra would cope with the increased Sulphur levels.

Dashing hopes that last weekend’s closure of Great Western Highway may have been temporary, Roads Minister Jenny Aitchison on Friday revealed damage to a 200-year-old stone causeway at Victoria Pass was more serious than initially feared. “I’ll be honest and upfront to the people of the Blue Mountains and the Central West: this closure is expected to remain in place for at least three months – it is incredibly serious,” Aitchison said.

The three-month closure is considered within government as the most optimistic scenario, while transport planners and local MPs believe the true closure time will be much longer. The government will also face pressure to compensate affected businesses.

The blockage will affect the NRL match between Panthers and Sharks at Bathurst this Saturday night, as thousands of fans from both clubs are expected to travel to the town.

I doubt “thousands” are going to head west for this. Mainly the locals and the odd hundreds of diehards.

Not even me!

But then I am heading to Perth next month for the double header.

Closed for ‘at least three months’ (for those unable to access the paywall version).

No big loss.

I see it is being called a “freeway” by the NSW Premier, a defunct and now seldom used term in the state and rarity in that it’s not a toll road.

Also, saw a report tonight on Seven News about an uptake of EVs with the fuel crisis, had NSW numberplates in the vision (so I assume NSW but may not be), but does anyone know the road in the background when the reporter appeared? Had glittering electronic signs and lights in use.

So before the Gateway Motorway and Airportlink/Clem Jones Tunnel there was a proposal for Northern Freeway.

I found this article at the State Library of Queensland website from 2017.

EDIT: found this map on Reddit. It was proposed by American firm Wilbur Smith and Associates in the Brisbane Transport Study in 1964. The same company also wrote the 1969 Melbourne Transportation Study.

The North-South Freeway is now known as Gateway Motorway.

Yes the Wilbur Smith plan for Brisbane freeways. It’s amazing how close some of the later motorways and tunnels built ended up being fairly close to that original proposal. The Northern Freeway will eventually be done with the Airport Link tunnel and the proposed Gympie Rd bypass tunnel - at an astronomically higher price of course. It’s a shame for the Northside as the freeways to the south and west (Western & Centenary) were built back in the 70s as per the plan. Even the “Southwest Expressway” was eventually built when Ipswich Road was upgraded to motorway standard. Some of the corridors were preserved like Trouts Road which would have been part of the Northwestern freeway had it been built. I’ve also been told the oddly wide Skyline Oatson Drive in Seven Hills is like that because it was being preserved for the Eastern Freeway.

That motorway network map is from 2008. The Centenary Motorway extension to Springfield isn’t on it.

This map’s close enough.

Nove radio show spent their morning today seeing how far they could drive their Tesla past 0%.

It actually happened yesterday (I mentioned that in the Nova Network thread).

In Queensland, the government will require e-bike riders to hold at least a learner’s licence and be 16 or older before using the controversial devices.

The government has backed all 28 recommendations from a recent parliamentary inquiry, either fully or in principle, in a sweeping move to tighten safety and regulation.

Faster, more powerful e-bikes — anything over 25km/h — will now be treated like motorbikes or mopeds, meaning they can only be ridden on the road and must be registered and insured.

Road user charging for EVs will need to come in tbh. Won’t be popular with Simon Holmes a Court, but dittums:

If the money is used to repair roads and control traffic then it’s fair enough.

I tend to agree. However, I think there is scope for a review of car rego and CTP insurance at the same time.

If you have comprehensive, CTP should be rolled in if it’s witht he same insurer. I know not all insurers doing CTP, and that needs to be reviewed, Make it two tiers - everyone must get tier 1 (CTP) and if you have tier 2 (comprehensive), tier 1 gets rolled in at minimal cost.

As for rego - I think you deserve a report on what roads in your area have been worked on using your rego fees.

And abolish tolls. As soon as you’ve paid back the construction cost, it goes toll free. Screw Transurban.

The New South Wales Government has awarded the construction contract for a major upgrade of Wakehurst Parkway, advancing plans to improve safety, congestion and flood resilience on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

Ertech Pty Ltd has been appointed to deliver the $85.1 million project, with construction scheduled to begin mid-year following upcoming site establishment works. Detailed design for the project has now been completed.
