Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival, Phillips said: “Rest assured, Doctor Who is going nowhere. Disney has been a great partnership — and it continues with The War Between The Land And The Sea next year — but going forward, with or without Disney, Doctor Who will still be on the BBC … The Tardis is going nowhere.”

Disney+ has exited its Doctor Who partnership with the BBC , which made the streamer the worldwide home of the sci-fi series outside the U.K. and Ireland. The BBC, however, says it’s committed to continuing the show; the next installment will be a 2026 Christmas special.

BBC confirms future of Doctor Who and a new Christmas Special in 2026

Fans of the beloved series have much to enjoy ahead of the special, with The War Between the Land and the Sea and a new animation series for CBeebies, which is in development

Doctor Who will be back on our screens at Christmas 2026 with a special episode written by Russell T Davies.

With Disney+ confirming they will not be partnering on the next season of the sci-fi show, the BBC remain fully committed to the show and will announce plans for the next series in due course to ensure the Doctor’s adventures continue.

Lindsay Salt, Director of Drama, BBC says: “We’d like to thank Disney+ for being terrific global partners and collaborators over the past two seasons, and for the upcoming The War Between the Land and the Sea. The BBC remains fully committed to Doctor Who, which continues to be one of our most loved dramas, and we are delighted that Russell T Davies has agreed to write us another spectacular Christmas special for 2026. We can assure fans, the Doctor is not going anywhere, and we will be announcing plans for the next series in due course which will ensure the TARDIS remains at the heart of the BBC.”

Before next year’s special, fans of the beloved series still have much to enjoy with The War Between the Land and the Sea heading to BBC iPlayer and BBC One later this year, as well as a brand-new animation series for CBeebies which is in development.

With Disney+ ending the partnership, it is possible that Doctor Who will return to the ABC in Australia. However, I think Stan could also interested, since it and the BBC have collaborated on several drama series.

Deadline has spoken to multiple sources in Doctor Who‘s orbit, who say the Disney deal fell apart for a variety of reasons, including concerns over the Ncuti Gatwa show’s failure to breakout from its established fan base and its big-ticket budget. Others suspect that fears of a “woke” backlash may be a factor, as Doctor Who has embraced diverse storytelling under showrunner Russell T Davies.

“It was pretty apparent from early on that this wasn’t for the long term,” says a former Disney executive. “Everyone got the impression that it wasn’t doing what it needed to do [on Disney+] to be sustained.” Another person close to Doctor Who adds: “The writing has been on the wall for ages. There has been a complete lack of enthusiasm over at Disney.”

The former Mouse House employee notes a lack of marketing firepower behind the brand — nowhere near the might of brands like Marvel or Star Wars — creating something of a chicken-and-egg scenario whereby it became harder for Doctor Who to cut through to American audiences. “It certainly wasn’t being shouted about as a big success,” adds this person.

Problem is that in the US, Doctor Who is a niech product. Yes it had a fanbase there but has never really cracked it in the mainstream.
