According to David over at TV Tonight, Disney is set to announce local Australian productions for Disney Plus next week.
That includes the previously announced documentary on the Matildas (Australian women’s soccer team), and Shipwreck Hunters Australia, but I also read reports that another new documentary on several AFLW clubs will be among the new productions.
Does Big Sky screen in Australia?
yes
On Star (Disney+)
But they air the episodes weirdly. They delayed the new season. Aired once a week ubtil they got up to date and then didn’t return the show from its mid season break and then they drop an episode a week once it finished over in the US. It’s weird.
Kind of sad that Disney+ has now commissioned more Australian drama than Seven and Nine combined (excluding Home and Away). The bigger players are stepping up to seal their dominance whilst our FTA sector is just waving the white flag and not even bothered to do anything meaningful to save themselves.
They are too busy spending tens of millions on tentpole reality and hundreds of millions on premium sport which continues to increase in cost over time.
At least Nine has (through its subsidiary Stan) commissioned first-run Australian dramas and movies.
What has Seven done?
Nothing. Which was my original point.
At least the streaming services branch out and diversify their output. FTA (especially Seven and Nine) just keeps serving up the same old crap year after year.
Does every network need to offer drama though to provide jobs to the industry?
It doesn’t hurt
It’s not just that. Scripted drama and comedy programs have longevity. These programs have a longer life than reality shows on network catch-up services and through streaming services.
The reality bubble will eventually burst in Australia and the networks will have nothing. The networks should be producing scripted programs for their future survival.
Hmm are we there now? Look at the ratings for Lego Masters, Big Brother, MasterChef and even The Voice.
Nothing at all about 900,000. It’s quite diabolical.
I think the linear TV bubble has burst. What’s going to rate higher on FTA? The house has burned to the ground.
