Digital TV Technical Discussion

Interesting. Thanks for sharing. I wonder if they’ll call it off now?

Bravo in HD? Surely 7Flix deserves HD more than Bravo.

To be honest Bravo gets a lot more new content so I would put Bravo in HD first.

Bravo launched in HD at its inception. I’m still surprised 7Flix isn’t HD yet.

Wait Until all of Seven Channels are in HD! Maybe switching All Commercial Channels to MPEG-4 can make the Picture Quality Improve.

7flix probably can’t go HD unless they get rid of TVSN and Racing (which probably won’t happen since that would bring in money for them by carrying them) - I can’t see there being enough space for all of that…

On Saturday there is racing on 7Two HD with a bit rate well above 7Mate that has Bathurst and the cricket on the main channel that is again 3rd, just above 7Bravo

Main HD 3.7
7Two HD 6.2
7Mate 4.3
Bravo 3.6
7Flix 1.9
TVSN 1.4
Race 2.1

I wouldn’t be surprised if 7flix still outrates 7Bravo more often than not but because of their recent expensive NBC-U output and are desperate to push Bravo and get as many viewers there as possible. It’d also make sense with the bitrates, marketing and first run content, in fact a lot of 7Plus and even promos on other m/c are all for Bravo.

It doesn’t help both channels have a similar target demo or at least get viewers from that younger female group. Makes you wonder if both channels have kind of been cannibalising each other and where that leaves 7flix’s future.
Seven would want to be careful though, as what if they lose the NBC deal eventually, perhaps they’ve invested too much now and would to anything to stop (e.g.) Nine from getting rights back.

I don’t think we’ll see flix get more attention with better quality picture/audio or content, until all of Seven’s other channels have become HD and been getting consistent ratings.

I mean there’s not even specific promos (movies) for 7flix anymore and hasn’t been for a few years, just generic ‘weekly’ or ‘nightly’ ones and the Law & Order ones are more than 2 years old now.

Is the Seven and 7TWO channels in Adelaide MPEG4 HD yet? Can’t check as I don’t live there but that was meant to change today.

Nothing had changed at ~6-7am before I left for the day, but it’s HD now.
When I get a moment I’ll put together some bitrates.

Could they axe the 7HD simulcast on 71 and flick 7Flix to HD?
Or bump mate to 71 and flix to 73/74?

The one video stream can appear with multiple channel numbers without taking up extra bandwidth.

There’s no simulcast - 71 just points to the same HD stream as 70.

7two certainly looking significantly nicer than SD at a similar bitrate.

The advantage of MPEG4, it’s been said that it is 50% more efficient than MPEG2, so I’m not surprised… 7two HD is looking quite nice here in Nth NSW too

Why do 7mate and 7Bravo have two different audio systems, even though they have the same screen resolution?

7mate is probably more likely to carry programs with Dolby 5.1 audio or something more than just straight stereo?

Is 10Bold in HD in Sydney? I’m staying in Sydney this week and 10Bold is the only SD channel with the aspect ratio not cropping the watermark. Also the WM on Bold is much clearer than the peach and Nic.

10Bold has been in HD in the 5 cities since 2021.

Could just be the show on 10Bold was an older one not made in HD.
