Digital TV Technical Discussion

I suspect that Bendigo channels were trying to make an appearance last night in Renmark on a couple frequencies (ABC on 536.500 and TEN on 564.500). Ruled out 44 Adelaide as the signal strength/quality would’ve formed a picture but it didn’t (even in the manual tuning section). Would’ve been a first if it was to decode

So they only air local ads on 10 and Nine? Would’ve thought Seven would still have local ads over 10 due to the fact that it has AFL, etc.

Have they also combined the two seperate main channel feeds (I.e. no seperate Riverland and SE feeds)

Why are there two transmitters for Halls Gap (Normal Ballarat channels and VAST channels)? I believe that the Lakeside TP is the only place in Victoria to have VAST channels on FTA.

I thought it would’ve been local ads too despite 10 being on the same bandwidth now instead of 536.500, 7 and 10 are both on 557.500

I think it’s to do with topography… it’s very hilly in that area, and the caravan park probably can’t get any terrestrial reception of the Ballarat signals from anywhere so has to retransmit VAST.

Stayed in Goondiwindi last week and both the TV in mine and my co-workers room weren’t MPEG4 compatble as they were older Panasonic TV’s which means a lot of channels simply ddidn’t work

MPEG4 only transmissions couldn’t come soon enough, but yes there will be cases where for whatever reason the set isn’t compatible. Just like Gordo I was in a motel (which was crap) in Toowoomba a couple months back that was the same, Panasonic plasma that didn’t support MPEG2. So it was no Seven for me there, but the rest mostly worked.

Easy fix with the Panasonic TVs. There’s a menu option to ‘Add MPEG-4 AVC Channels’.

Circa 2009 models onwards have that option.

Got this model at home still. Brilliant TV. Runs like a champ.

Yeah issue is some motels block out the main menus so you can’t change stuff

There’s a possible sign that 7TWO is going HD in the state capitals.

7TWO has popped briefly up on channel 256 on Foxtel iq5 set top boxes, including mine in Melbourne. This is significant because the only FTA channels that normally appear in the 200’s range on Foxtel set top boxes are HD channels. So this could mean that they expect 7TWO to switch over to HD soon in at least one mainland state capital. This probably applies to iQ4 set top boxes as well.

Currently there is no 7TWO HD in Melbourne, so 256 was set to 7TWO IP (i.e. via the internet), which is something that Foxtel iQ4 and iQ5 set top boxes can do for all FTA channels.

It’s gone now, but curiously, if you use channel up, it skips over 156 unless you enter the channel number manually.

Original article: Foxtel - #3916 by EMTV

BACKGROUND: On Foxtel iQ4 and iQ5 set top boxes, free to air channels can be set up to be received either via FTA (i.e. an antenna), via satellite (where available and where satellite reception is configured) or via IP (i.e. via the net).

Some channels that were in SD but are now in HD have two channel numbers, e.g. 7MATE has 157 and 257 but the one (SD or HD) that can’t be received by FTA or satellite can only be set to IP. For the other one you have a choice.

I think that because the 7 Regionals already have 7Two HD is that sign anyway.

Not sure where to post this exactly – just trying to gauge interest in a DVB-T recording server. Basically, it’s a webpage where you can schedule to record a channel or an entire mux and then once the recording is done, it’ll automatically be available for download as a TS file from the same server. The server has access to both Sydney and Wollongong channels, though Wollongong channels can get wiped out when there’s tropo from Newcastle.

The intention of the server is for recording of things like station IDs, news, etc. and analysis of mux configuration/bitrates and not for the recording of programming like series, movies, etc., so to prevent abuse, I’m thinking of only allowing access for MediaSpy members who ask for access.

I already have it live with one tuner and a MediaSpy member is already testing/utilising it but I’m evaluating interest in the server to determine whether I should add more tuners so that more muxes can be recorded at the same time so let me know if you’re interested, though no guarantees that it’ll go live.

Does any MS members here living in Regional Victoria (or anyone living in outer Melbourne closer to the west) know if they would have the equipment needed to set up a DVB-T recording webserver just like the one provided by TVCL? I’m talking reception for Ballarat and Bendigo stations, or even just one. (It’s been interesting to see the Wollongong ones so far.)

It would be interesting to record and see news updates, station IDs, sponsor billboards and regionalised advertising there. BTW, I remember someone in a particular thread discussing about how Bacchus Marsh and Geelong ads tend to make their way onto the Ballarat channels, so it would be very interesting to see.

If anyone knows of anything, or if they have the equipment to set up a server like this, please update me back. Thank you very much. :sunglasses:

Should I start another thread where we discuss about DVB-T Webservers? If so, please let me know. If not, or if you want to, then that’s fine. Thanks.

Probably less likely to find people willing to host the DVB-T server than the FM one given it needs a lot more internet bandwidth as well as a lot of disk space to run. Although it would be nice if someone else was also willing to run a DVB-T server in their area.

It would be nice, I’m sure some others might also be able to set up their own webservers in their areas (if their disk space and internet connection can handle it). At least we have the Wollongong side of it, which is very nice. :sunglasses:

no need
