AM and FM DX

Some Sydney DXing server updates:

  • FM (TVCL Radio 3): I have a spare TEF lying around so I might connect it up to my S dipole about 2m AGL in my backyard soon. It won’t be mounted high up, but it does have differences to the other two TEF servers (e.g. 88.7 is Vintage FM instead of 2MWM and it gets 94.1 Pulse FM and 105.3 Kix Country reasonably well; Vox and Highland are better than on TVCL Radio 1 too [with RDS {although maybe it was just tropo when I was testing it}]).

  • AM (TVCL AirSpy 2): My current AirSpy HF+ server is connected to an MLA-30 which performs better on HF/SW than it does with MW/AM, so I’m looking to connect up my YouLoop aerial in my backyard for MW/AM DXing with my AirSpy R2. The handy thing about the AirSpy is that you can just record the baseband for the whole AM broadcast band and scan through an on-the-hour recording of the band later to search for IDs. Sample recording of the YouLoop’s performance in my backyard here.

  • DAB: Happy to set up a Sydney DAB+ server if someone knows of any software that can do it. I get reception of the usual 9A/9B/9C muxes as well as the trial community mux on 8D.

  • DVB-T: I have a DVB-T server set up that gets both Sydney and Wollongong channels. You can schedule recordings on a web page and then download the recording from the webpage afterwards. More info here.

  • Other servers: I have an ADS-B server feed that’s live, but I assume there’s no real interest/need for that given the aggregators like FR24. I also had a NSW PSN (formerly the Government Radio Network) server previously, but that’s been down for a while now.
