Digital Radio

Oh right, sorry!

I was thinking of the ARN station based in Sydney (96.1 FM there) that is also on DAB in other cities.

as i’ve said before. i take the fact that coles radio is no 1 in digital radio with a (massive) grain of salt.

those not up with the tech might think they have a digital radio because it has a digital display, and coles radio gets ticked because they were listening to it when they were doing the weekly grocery shop.

Coles Home Brand no doubt.

The commercial stations in Canberra have upped the bit rates of their DAB+ stations. It appears that the allocation of the excess space on the multiplex has occurred and it was given to the commercial stations.

2CA -96 kbps
2CC - 96 kbps
Kix Country - 64kbps
My Canberra - 96kbps
Snow Digital - 64kbps
Coles Radio - 32kbps
Total - 448kbps

Hit 104.7 - 112kbps
Hit Buddha - 96kbps
Mix106.3 - 112kbps
The Edge - 96kbps
Club Lime Radio - 32kbps
Total - 448kbps

Adding on the community stations:

1RPH - 48kbps
1WAY - 48 kbps
2XX - 48kbps
Artsound - 64kbps
CMS Digital - 48kbps
Total - 256kbps

How does Coles Radio get into Canberra? I’m guessing Nova leases the bandwidth from ARN? If that’s the case why isn’t there Chemist Warehouse Remix instead?

Coles Radio is on the Capital allocation.

Isn’t Club Lime Radio an ARN/ iHeartRadio station?

It’s an SCA/ARN station.

Interesting though not unexpected - would have been nice for them to allocate community stations the extra 64k needed to get them 64k each.

Coles is a little low but I suppose that’s all Coles are paying for.

Very interested what happens on the SCA/ARN side. I’m expecting that they won’t cross the streams, so maybe Mix 80s/90s, and then Hit Easy and Hit Oldskool? They really should add some Triple M and Pure Gold network stations, but I suspect they will not introduce new brands.

This is great!:+1:

A quick google returns no ACCC document of auction results unlike the five metro auctions of excess capacity.

At the usual error correction, 1152 kbps is the full capacity, the equal allocation of commercial spectrum implies that perhaps a grant rather than an auction was made.

All these cumbersome regulations would be redundant if DRM+ was used.

We might have to wait until the annual reports come out around August to find out.

This won’t last

I think you confidently say the entire Canberra FM bit-rates (except Club Lime) won’t last!

ARN and SCA have so much to pipe in. As has already been mentioned, it’ll be interesting to see what stations they bring in or whether a Pure Gold or Triple M station is added. I guess SCA and ARN are currently fighting it out to work out what stations to add that doesn’t conflict with the existing Canberra FM listener base.

My guess is they will use the existing brands rather then launch Triple M Stations.
Most likely supplementary dab+ stations
ARN
Mix 80, 90’s
Chemist Warehouse Remix
SCA
Hit Old School
Hit Urban
Hit Dance

I agree that the Canberra community stations via DAB+ should be at least 64kbps…and that the currently high bitrates of the commercial stations (especially the SCA/ARN ones) won’t last long!

I always preferred that branding to Pure Gold 80s and iHeart Radio The 80s… WSFM 80s as it is now in Sydney is OK, but doesn’t roll off the tongue as quickly as Mix80s did… I totally understand why it’s not used now though.

Been listening to 6GT here in Perth. The music selection is pretty much late 60s, 70s, and up to mid 80s Some nice music, a bit more diverse than 6iX and reminds me of OMG. It is also what 6iX should be: hourly news bulletins, announcers only during peak listening, no mindless promos or games, and very few if any commercials. Only today I noticed it finally has rolling text, but it seems to be sourced the same as the others I have seen: station name/logo and then a weather report. Sounds good, hope this one stays for a while.

After getting excited by this it looks like 6GT are now back to late 60s and 70s, and less of the 80s. Too bad. Anyway they do have a home page: https://www.6gtperth.com.au/ which also lists the sister stations. All news talkback except for Magic in Mebourne and 2UE in Sydney. What is the music selection / genre on these by comparison to 6GT?
