That looks like a reasonably good speaker…wonder if I should pick one of these up or find one second hand… im sure the problems can be fixed pretty easily… might look on the second hand market for one because $199 in the shops is a bit steep for the build quality, or if anyone had a broken one here i’ll take it off your hands
Hi Andrew
Yes, I was impressed with the quality of the speaker. It’s sort of a deep dish speaker with a big flexible rubber roll around the edge of the cone. I love the sound it turns out, but obviously this is a subjective judgement.
I don’t know of any store selling the Blaupunkt. I returned five of mine to Bing Lee and JB. Since about last November they haven’t been selling any. All stores out of stock. I think the word has got around.
So it looks like a second hand one. As mentioned previously I was lucky to find a brand new Bush on Gumtree recently.
As for repairing them, you may know much more than I do. Some problems, like the buttons stuck in are purely mechanical and should be easily fixed. Others, like the set turning off randomly and the nightlight not working would seem to indicate that the main OS chip may need reprogramming.
Maybe ring Ayonz, the repair agency, and ask if they have any returned radios that you could buy. They should have heaps of them. Good luck!
I know some here might find this hard to believe, but it says everything to me about where DAB+ is, & where it’s going.
The Redfern (Sydney) DAB+ translator site has been decommissioned by CRA & won’t be replaced (any time soon), the old parts are now sitting at our Artarmon site.
The building it was housed at is undergoing major works, including building 6 new floors on top, so it was decided to abandon Redfern.
Anyone around town want to test reception & let us know if it’s now worse around the city, or isn’t Redfern needed as it’s covered by other sites?
I was at Newtown last week (or was it the week before). It was fine the reception. I think Sydney Centrepoint Tower provides adequate coverage.
This probably means that the Sutherland/Bonnet Bay site won’t ever get to air.
Maybe they can recycle the kit for that site.
Koori Radio had their standby transmitter on the same building. It is being moved somewhere else, do know?
Antennas are rusty & have been scrapped, the rest of the gear is now spare parts, it’s all 8 years old now, so may never even be used as spares?
Don’t know, Koori Radio have/had 2 TX sites, maybe they’ll just use the one now?
I could be wrong on this, but I thought Korri Radio initially commenced broadcasts from the Redfern (old TNT building) before switching main tx to the CBD building.
I’m also not surprised to hear that the Redfern site scrapped. The new highrise apartment building beside it is much higher. I would not have wanted to live in one of those upper level apartments & be comfortable with all that radiation beaming in so close.
I was in Newtown/Redfern area last week & thought most antennas were still there on that building.
I’d have to check on Koori Radio, I think their backup site is actually on top of their studio building, so decommissioning this site as a general TX site shouldn’t have any effect on them?
Yes most antennas are still on the building, the DAB+ ones are rusty & not worth saving, so they were left for destruction, others may be the same?
I’ve been told (& I don’t know how it’s come about), but I think it’s the developers, don’t know who owns some of the antennas on the building, & if they’re still operational (including Police Radio possibly), so when they start demolition on the roof area, they don’t know who they’ll take off air?
ones are rusty & not worth saving
How long do FM/DAB aerials can last? I guess it “depends” on the location. I would expect it to last 15 years without rusting?
Yes, depends where they’re located & what they’re made from, if they are Aluminium or Stainless Steel, & what the mounts are made from also?
10 - 15 years average would be about right generally, higher power antennas are thicker & more solidly built, so they’ll last longer than a low power antenna that mightn’t be built any better or stronger than the TV antenna on the roof of your house.
Typically suburban community stations use cheap ones? I would assume labor is the main expense when replacing aerials. Or are the technical staff also volunteers?
I am surprised the DAB repeaters they wouldn’t use good quality ones so it last longer and less need to spend money on labor.
Sounds about right. lol.
Looking at ACMA records. One of the significant owners is TPG with several links, which so happened to go off air midday yesterday for over 2 hours…
ACMA records still show Koori Radio 93.7MHz standby site & STL at 1 Lawson Square, whether accurate or not I don’t know? Can’t see antennas on the Koori Radio studio site with Google Street View (dated, so could be there now?) Maybe Nearmap might be a better recent online viewing resource?
He just sounds bitter that SCA/Podcast One didn’t pickup his show. haha
Agree, theres usually an ulterior motive to some of those articles!
Nine Radio has updated the NTS website, so it appears it is staying. As I’m sure we all agree, this station is a waste with its current format of repeats.
What Nine Radio should do is reband NTS to Nine Sports Radio (NSR). NSR can carry talksport, Cricket, NRL and AFL. Let Magic be a 24/7 Music station. Its stupid putting Sports on Nine MUSIC radio I think
That would put NTS to much better use
As if by magic MacSports has become Magic Perth playing a nice selection of music I must say. However seems to have teething problems (happened to play two tracks at the same time and then radio silence for almost a minute between songs). Not bad, one of the few commercial stations left playing as high as 48 kbps, I think I will preselect it.
And in other news (thread): Nine Music Radio (formerly Macquarie Sports Radio)
