It’s just one stream though with redirects from the various titles. Similar to digital TV where 7 and 71, 9 and 91 etc are the same stream.
@robtog raised a good point though.
The titles have a unique ID too.
In Melbourne for example (I’m speculating, I don’t have the gear to check), the NTS title changes to “Radio 3AW” and also changes to point to the 3AW audio stream (with the NTS radio stream being removed), so any presets or radios set to NTS change over the 3AW rather than just stop working.
And Triple M Sydney too.
As MMM104.9 and TRIPLE M
That’s purely to make it easier to find the station. Different people would default to searching different options.
The same reason they have triplem.com.au and mmm.com.au
But if every station did that, it wouldn’t really be any easier at all!
eg.
2GB
Two GB
Radio 2GB
873 2GB
I just seen pop up in on the iHeartRadio app the digital only Hobart stations from 7HOFM:
7HO Classic Hits: Listen to the Best Podcasts & Shows Online, Free | iHeart
7HO River: Listen to the Best Podcasts & Shows Online, Free | iHeart
ZOO super digi is back on DAB+ in Sydney, but it’s been broadcast on the FUN channel. The sound quality is excellent.
It would great if BOG could stream their Sydney DAB stations on the RadioApp or on digitalradioplus.com.au
WOW that’s taken a long time … I bet BOG didn’t even restart it on purpose, that it’s somehow restarted itself or as a side effect from another system change?
Possibly they put ZOO back on air due to the new Mike E and Emma breakfast show on R&B Fridays starting on Monday??
Not sure why it’s coming from the FUN channel. BOG have upgraded their sound quality to close to CD quality. Amazing at 48 kbps EEP 4.
Yeah I don’t see (well hear) how 48kbps would sound anywhere near Red Book CD at 44.1khz 16bit which would be 1,411kbps (uncompressed).
It may sound good for 48kbps but.
The source quality might have improved to be closer to CD quality. This is possible if they are using FLAC or ALAC for the music library. Then the only compression in the audio signal chain is most likely the final encode for DAB+.
When computer playback of music at radio stations began to appear in the 90s there was a tendency due to storage limits at the time to use heavily compressed MP2 or MP3 formats. It showed when listening on FM as bitrates 128kbps or lower are arguably worse than FM quality.
Now most metros have “re-ripped” to a lossless music library. Some regionals still sound terrible though, possibly using the same MP3 file that a work experience kid in 1998 ripped off a CD into the library.
Still they have to Fix Their Sound Quality of Fun Digital and Gorilla Radio.
It was pretty close to CD quality sound. Brilliant for radio and better than anything on FM.
FUN also sounded as good before it went silent a week or so ago. Since ACE took over 2UE, BOG have upped the sound quality on FUN and ZOO was only on for a day. It’s gone off again.
On another topic I heard WSFM 80s play an R&B track recently- The Message by Grandmaster flash and the Furious five. Great to hear them playing 80s R&B.
Out of interest what are you listening on?
Yamaha mini hifi.
Must be a good one then… Yamahas are normally pretty high end. Although some brands get bought out and are no longer as high end as they were 40 years ago.
Yamaha are one of only a few of the original Hi-Fi brands still under original ownership. Onkyo, Pioneer, Harman Kardon are all under ownership of other companies. Only recently Denon and Marantz (under the Sound United brands) were sold to a medical company.
Y’all spoke to soon, It’s back off air again.
I definitely recommend them, especially for DAB. It’s very robust and has good sound quality for a small Hi-fi system. It also has a USB port which is good for having loads of songs on random shuffle.
I’ve hardly ever used the CD player. I mostly listen to radio or USB, or plug in a mini-disc player through aux.
