Does SCA own the rights to the EON FM brand though? Keep in mind that there is a company called EON Broadcasting, who I think might’ve had something to do with EON FM in a previous lifeform…
I would have thoughts the rights would be transferred as part of the ownership transfer ie. you are buying ALL intellectual property such as all trademarks, along with the licence and equipment etc.
I suspect someone far more experienced than me could comment on Australian intellectual property laws, but as far as I am aware the fact that there is a company called EON Broadcasting doesn’t stop Triple M from having the brand EON-FM. The argument would be about whether listeners would confuse the defunct EON Sports Radio with a relaunched EON-FM.
IIRC nearly 10 years ago, 3MMM were using the phrase EON Nights and using old EON jingles for the evening stint. So something should be possible. The question is could they be bothered. EON is a very Melbourne name and given the desire to roll out brands Australia wide via DAB, probably meaningless elsewhere and therefore too much effort and cost. Far easier to roll out another Triple M “insert phrase” rock.
IP Australia is the govt website for trademark checks.
Looks as though trademarks relating to EON FM have all lapsed, though they were held by the licencee of 3MMM (Melbourne FM Radio Pty Ltd, later Triple M Melbourne Pty Ltd).
This morning Gold 80’s played a 90’s song. It was Go West by the Pet Shop Boys.
Thanks @AustralianAerial, that’s great you looked them up.
I wonder if 9D will ever be used?
Are you talking in the metro areas that already have DAB or regional areas?
If you’re talking Metro areas that already have DAB, 9D won’t be used, unless you want to fork out the few $100,000 in each market for a couple of new transmitters, & a bit more for the extra transmission infrastructure required, (just at the main sites), then you have to populate all the in-fill translators as well.
Point me in the right direction if this has been posted previously but wasn’t able to find anything. Any recent updates on digital radio for regional? Mix country’s website mentions they will be broadcasting on digital on the gold coast and Sunshine Coast soon.
Gold Coast yes, but how soon is soon?
AFAIK the Gold Coast DAB site is planned, but building it hasn’t started yet, unlikely to be on air this side of new year, but still a small possibility.
Sunshine Coast, no knowledge of DAB there, I don’t think it’s even been approved for use on the Sunshine Coast by ACMA yet?
All ABC DAB+ signals in Melbourne are off the air at the moment (8am).
Couldn’t possibly be any mistakes in this totally professional graphic, could there?
Looks like they’ve outsourced the written content to the Super Radio Network.
There wouldn’t be many radios that would allow one to tune to 1212 AM or 92.51 FM.
Kix still has Deniliquin listed even though Ace Radio replaced it with an FM mono simulcast of 2QN on that frequency.
so we know if they will do a seamless transition from one national station in brisbane to the GC version? (reception pending?).
it wouild be nice not to ahve to retune to the GC newsradio when i am already on the BNE Broadcast
At the moment there’s no plans for ABC/SBS DAB on the Gold Coast, only the commercial networks, there’s allowance for the Nationals being made in the transmission infrastructure if they want to join in the future, but no plans for Nationals to be on air from there for the time being.
What’s going on with the Digital Radio Constructions? Delayed by the Pandemic.
Slightly off topic,
But do the Triple J and ABC FM services use ‘AF’ in RDS to switch back and forth as you travel say from the GC, through Brissy to the sunny coast??
Seems like a perfect spot for it…Along with Tassie’s North West Coast for ABC Local radio.
I beg to differ. I do think it will eventually be used by the commercial networks, as listenership to DAB+ is increasing, the opportunities to make more money off of advertising from DAB+ is also increasing and SCA, ARN, and Nova would all love an extra 256 kbs of capacity in the metros to add more stations I’m sure.
