Digital Radio - Content

A lot of companies do that. Pharmacy4Less and IGA do it as well.

In fact, I found a press release from IGA and SMA announcing its arrival in Tasmania several years ago!

Nice catch! Looking forward to more of these coming to DAB+.

But then IGA is selling the radio (subscription) service to franchisees to entice customers to remain and shop some more, whereas Coles is paying on DAB for listeners attracted to the station to remember Coles as a brand (rather than the other guy with a W). Well I think that is why they are there on DAB (ditto CW Remix?).

In some sections of the Chemist Warehouse pharmacies CW Remix competes with the sound from the screens showing clips from the television show, Britney Spears perfume promos and other ads. I have my doubts about the effectiveness of it in-store.

And TikTok Trending is live. “Exclusive on iHeartRadio”, with the added bonus of two songs playing over the top of each other :face_vomiting:

IGA in store radio is actually quite good; I wouldn’t mind having it on DAB. The Bungendore IGA certainly airs some lost classics.

Only a temporary station at this stage.

The companion station launches today and runs for three months.

[TikTok Australia’s director of music, Ollie] Wards said its success will be determined by user feedback and whether or not it’s deemed to be a “damn good listen”.

I am not listening.

Companion station?

I’ve not heard that term before, but I kinda like it.

SoundCloud and TikTok and Chemist Warehouse are well known brands in their own right, so they don’t need to connect to the Hit or KIIS networks. There is plenty of brand awareness and all parties would be benefiting in some way from it, otherwise these branded stations wouldn’t be launched in the first place.

I think what SCA is doing with SoundCloud is fantastic. It’s a great sounding station, benefiting both companies, artists and a chance for SCA to promote it’s other shows and podcasts etc.

TikTok radio will have different announcers, some of them choosing the playlists, so this will enhance the listener experience.

So TikTok is now on air in Sydney.
Bit rate is 48 kbps.

Interestingly, the program type is showing as “Children’s” … at the moment, there is young voice humming a tune and asking people to guess it.

Will be interesting to see if the song selection reflects the program type.

That’s thinking about it in the opposite direction. Younger people in general don’t listen to radio anywhere near as much as they’ll use streaming services or social media - so a station collaboration with SoundCloud/TikTok branding should be utilised as a bridge back to their other offerings.

Maybe they could achieve that with enough station promos for their other brands instead of co-branding - I haven’t listened to either long enough to hear ads, in general these branded stations don’t have “commercials” just self-promotion slots.

I really struggle to see the benefit to SCA/ARN to these stations, if they are successful it kinda just highlights their own stations’ inability to play new artists first. I expect they’ll be short lived - can’t see SoundCloud/TikTok getting much of a return on investment either, unless it’s just a royalty reduction play.

Couldn’t they find anything else to put on digital radio? This sounds stupid.

A ticking clock or a metronome would be more interesting.

Ah TikTok, that Chinese owned social media platform that has terms and conditions which put it of the belief it is above the law like Facebook and other data miners.

No thanks.

I would prefer a loop of ‘Tik Tok’ by Kesha- and that’s saying something!

Or how about bird noises. Except for the Common Koel of course.

Or this…on repeat

Also there is a competition.
Here on Perth DAB+ we have the following stations that carry music in the last two decades:
Nova 93.7, My Perth Digital, Urban Hits, Soundcloud, TiKTiK Trending, JJJ, JJJ Unearthed, CW Remix

Enough don’t you think for the Spotify generation?
