Digital Radio - Content

ABC Radio Australia has now been added to the Brisbane ensemble. According to Digital Bitrate list, also in Melbourne and Perth too, so likely in other cities as well. Looks to be running at 48k here.

I assume you can generalise:

ME ABC&SBS RADIO
ABC Sport 40kbps
ABC MELBOURNE 56kbps Down from 64kbps
ABCRadioNational 56kbps Down from 64kbps
ABC Classic 112kbps Down from 120kbps
triple j 72kbps
triplejUnearthed 64kbps Down from 72kbps
Double J 72kbps
ABC Jazz 88kbps
ABC KIDS listen 56kbps Down from 64kbps
ABC Country 64kbps Down from 72kbps
ABC NewsRadio 40kbps
ABC Radio Aust 48kbps New
SBS Radio 1 40kbps
SBS Radio 2 40kbps
SBS Radio 3 48kbps
SBS Chill 72kbps
SBS PopAsia 72kbps
SBS Arabic 48kbps
SBS South Asian 64kbps

I don’t really understand adding it - Radio Australia doesn’t seem like it offers much unique to someone listening domestically.

Hopefully this isn’t the first of many “just shave off 8kbps” moves that eventually end with ABC running 32kbps stations. Indeed Radio Australia could probably have been 32kbps mono and not mattered - it’s not a music heavy service, and that could have meant keeping ABC Local and ABC Classic where they were.

I was confused this morning (Perth) as one radio with a single line display showed ABC Radio Aust and immediately followed by ABC Sport (yes it was sports coverage), which had me confused with ABC Sport (which seemed to have different sports coverage). So the current programming on ABC Radio Aust is ABC Sport (which it apparently is according to Radio Schedule - ABC Pacific ). I guess for locals this is the ‘best of’ or ‘greatest hits from’ ABC RN and ABC Sports flavoured with a Pacific twist.

Good to see Radio Australia available on DAB. They’ve currently got the NRL game on 3 stations: ABC LR, ABC RA and ABC Sport.

This really hurts to see. I’m glad we are getting RA but Unearthed is one of the best & most important stations on DAB+ and a case study for what’s good about it. It’s all about music, new Aussie music specifically which should be high priority.. It badly needs more bitrate, not less

Available on the Sydney 9C Multiplex as well. Received in Bowral NSW.

ABC could easily squeeze in Triple J Hottest on 48 or 64kbps by reducing some bandwidth from ABC LR (16kbps) ABC RN (16kbps) Triple J (8kbps) Double J (8kbps), ABC Kids Listen (8kbps), ABC Country (8kbps).

Agree. But Iris’s head is about to explode with that suggestion

The target market for Triple J is not for those who are hard of hearing :deaf_person:

They will be if they turn the volume on their personal devices to the loudest possible level for the longest possible time and wreck their eardrums.

I suppose it also depends what age bracket you’re in? If you’re a lifelong Triple J listener, then that’s a lot of ear drum abuse, and at some point you can’t even tell the difference between good and bad sound quality

RA does have a number of unique shows and the news is more geared to the pacific than domestic news. Personally as a news junkie i find coombving AM / The World Today / Pacific Beat and PM is a great combo.

they also broadcast more AFL so thats good if your in the northern states.

Isn’t it the opposite though? Better quality will be more audible to those who are younger with better hearing
