I have always wished GOLD a would play the odd couple of news songs an hour like Smooth do. I would actually listen if they played some modern tracks which would increase there variety. It would also fit into there no repeat workday.
I would prefer them sticking to 70s-90sâŚplenty of gold to mine there. And stations like XLFM and Breeze prove that itâs possible.
I agree.
BBC Radio 2 does this. For example they are currently playing a new (released 2019) song by Richard Marx. It fits the format perfectly as do the other newer tracks they play, alongside ABBA and the Beatles. I always think classic hits stations should still play the odd newer song, not too many, but some.
Just an anecdote, my 18 yo goddaughter in the UK doesnât complain on long car trips listening to Radio 2. She likes ABBA and Billy Joel. At the other end of the spectrum her grandmother is glued to Radio 2 all day and hums along to Lady GagaâŚ
I think the key to a good radio station to turn on and leave on is variety.
Smooth FM is playing some truly hideous tunes lately.
Moves Like Jagger / Maroon 5
Possibly one of my most hated songs of recent years. Instant station changer.

No doubt in response to WS (& Gold to a much lesser extent), whoâve been playing that song for the last few years.
According to Lava, as of 18th July 2020 at 2pm AEST, WS played the song 656 times, 2nd only to Mix 102.3 in Adelaide, who played it 922 times. Gold 104.3 played the song only 55 times, whilst Smooth played it only around 12-15 times so far.

Gold did this when they were KZ-FM in 1990 (and 3KZ before), they played âhits and memoriesâ a mix of current (and 80s) tracks with oldies from the 50s 60s and 70s.
WS did in the late 90 with their âBest Songs Of All Timeâ format⌠I remember hearing what were then current Top 40 songs from Belinda Carlisle (In Too Deep) and Shania Twain (If Youâre Not In It For Love).
Speaking of WS, they are now playing Ed Sheeran as I type (Thinking Out Loud from 2014).

I thought âThe Best Songs of All Timeâ was the format 2WS ran just after the FM conversion.
Late 90s (and indeed, Early 2000s) 2WS was Classic Hits, if Iâm not mistaken.
Actually it was 1996-1997, not quite late 90s⌠more mid 90s I guess.

Thatâs correct. Its positioner when on AM was âHits & Memoriesâ, and before that, âGreatest Memories & Latest Hitsâ.
Late 90s (and indeed, Early 2000s) 2WS was Classic Hits, if Iâm not mistaken.
It was early 1999 when 2WS became a âClassic Hitsâ station, with its full positioning statement being âClassic Hits & The Best of Todayâ.
2UW was Sydneyâs âClassic Hitsâ station in the mid-late 80s to early 90s, before it converted to FM as Mix 106.5 in April 1994.
Amazing by Alex Lloyd on Classic Hits 2CH this afternoon.
Probably another track which wouldnât be out of place on Mix 106.5 in the Early 2000s!

Or on WSFM today for that matter, who has only played the song 3 times (according to Lava as of 5pm, 27/7/20), compared to 2CHâs 154 spins.
Also, that song was #1 on JJJâs Hottest 100 back in 2001!
âClassic Hits & The Best of Todayâ.
Wasnât Good times and great classic hits? I donât remember âthe best of todayâ.
I still like it
This predated the above logo by close to 5 years.
The 2WS logo at the time when it changed from âThe Best Songs Of All Timeâ to âClassic Hitsâ looked something like this:
That âClassic Hits & The Best of Todayâ positioner seemed to have only been used briefly in early 1999 during the aforementioned âtransitionâ period.
Gimme Dat Ding - The Pipkins on Coles radio this morning.
Superman by Alison MacCallum on 2UE. A bit of a lost aussie classic. I hear Shirley from Skyhooks in the backing vocals I think.
