Did They Really Just Play That?

I can’t remember the last time I’ve heard that on a commercial station. Great song.

1994, on 2day fm / Nxfm / B105.
It was a great song and brings back memories.

“Be Firm” also got a lot airplay back then and is never heard anymore. Deserves a spin or two these days as well.

‘Coma’, ‘Be Firm’, and a cover of ‘Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)’ were Max Sharam’s hits, and all of them were played regularly in the mid 90s. I think she was a ‘Triple J darling’ initially though, having come out of rural Victoria (Benalla).

All are featured on Sumo FM of course.

Given Wave FM’s desire to target younger audiences, I got a surprise to hear this one a short while ago

Two very opposite ones I’ve heard today

Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go (Wham!) - on Power FM Muswellbrook

I Love It (Sneaky Sound System) - on 2SM and the Super Radio Network.

That would also have been heard on Wave FM Wollongong & Power FM Bega, which all shared the same log with the above station, as well as with Hot 91, Hitz 939 & Star Mackay/Townsville/Cairns.

Two examples from i98fm this afternoon:

  • “Once in a Lifetime” by Talking Heads just before 3.30pm. It’s a great song, but I wouldn’t expect a song from 1980 to be played during i98fm’s drive shift.

  • All American Rejects’ “Move Along” was played on the station a few minutes ago. Very surprising to see that they picked that over “Gives You Hell”, which was the band’s biggest hit in Australia. What makes the song choice even stranger is the fact that “Move Along” wasn’t even a Top-40 hit here; it only peaked at #73 on the ARIA Charts.

Was out on a training run yesterday listening to MMM Classic Rock on the phone, and at 6:10PM EST came The Doors - Light My Fire. Sure it more than fits the narrative of the station, but would that song be necessarily be a good one to play given the current climactic conditions?

Yep- that one is a bona fide shocker.

I quite like this song though, which shares the same title. A KROQ-only new wave hit:

Have You Ever Seen The Rain - Creedence Clearwater Revival

Never would have considered that to be a country song.

CCR dubbed themselves ‘swamp rock’, basically rock with Southern American countryfied roots. They pretended to be ‘Born On The Bayou’ despite being from sunny California. But definitely not out-and-out country.

In an usual series of events, the Hit stations are slowly starting to take force on Prince (no wait, it was by The ARTIST Formerly Known As Prince)'s The Most Beautiful Girl In The World. A song that’s long-time affected by a lawsuit (and Hit are now giving Warner Chapel Music some royalties) is continuing to be a Smooth FM staple and then some.

Also, it’s funny how iHeartRadio is displaying the cover for a DIFFERENT “Most Beautiful Girl” song when it plays on-air!

I really have to put this one in here because it is quite inappropriate at the moment really!
