Did They Really Just Play That?

It’s OK, that game hasn’t started yet and doesn’t start until 1 December

Been a DAB Xmas station running all year in Brisbane

I knew that was the case in Sydney, wasn’t sure about Melbourne or Brisbane.

Melbourne used to get a popup “Light Christmas”, but they had Light Worship replace it and we haven’t had the Christmas popup from them since.

Speaking of which, when I went to check it hadn’t gone away, Light Worship had just finished playing Dynamite from BTS. I suppose counts as worship for Army, but kinda an odd one…

Classic countdown on 2st, don’t know if have heard this on commercial radio before. Theme tonight is strange and weird. Might have to try and make a version for Billy Bob’s themed request list.

No ordinary world by John Farnham, I don’t know if I heard that on radio in recent times. Amazing countdown almost think I am listening to inphase on SWR.

They do have some great countdowns.

Fact: The basis of “Stranger In Moscow” was used as the Credits theme for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 as Michael Jackson was apparently the composer of that game.

I like the 20/20 Retro Countdown, too! I streamrip it from Hot Tomato Gold, where it plays with no ad breaks (but still the occasional promo). I’ve posted tonight’s countdown in the Music Logs thread.

Thanks re Hot Tomato Gold, I’ll keep that in mind, particularly when it’s not DST, otherwise I’d need to wait until 8pm here to listen.

Thanks for reminding me of the downsides. Mainly the non-DST thing right now, but also once in a blue moon the music gets updated in the playout system but not Andrew’s hosting segments, meaning that a totally different countdown is going on compared to what he’s describing!

Heard one this morning that struck me as a little bit off

You Can Call Me Al - Paul Simon

On i98 Wollongong, always thought they didn’t really play any 80s songs these days.

I have heard that happen once. I was streaming 5RM; not sure if it happened across the network. It’s a pretty major goof for a commercial network.

Read my lips by Melissa on MIX 92.7 FM. Having heard that for a while on commercial radio.

Heard “Lucky Man” by the Verve on Triple M’ Newcastle’s Tanya and Steve morning show at 20 minutes to 8 this morning. Haven’t heard that song in a long time as most of the stations just flog “Bittersweet Symphony” every day of the week.

JRs fave song

Good song, other The Verve songs lost to radio, “The Drugs Don’t Work”, and my favourite of theirs “Sonnet”

6:53am AEDT this morning on bay93.9, a sweeper aired: “From the 80s classics you love…” (insert INXS New Sensation) “…to the best NEW songs”, then goes to play a song released in 2010, Bruno Mars Marry You. This year marks 15 years since that song’s original release.

New songs would be generally around 2020-present at best.

Not from the radio but yesterday afternoon when I was at the Sydney Kings game at Qudos Bank Arena when they were playing against the New Zealand Breakers, there was an off key flute cover of A-Ha’s “Take On Me” Playing throughout the arena as the Kings PA Eric Stephens was announcing the away team’s starting lineup.

I’ve heard a lot of NRL teams do this to taunt the away teams such as South Sydney Rabbitohs playing John Williams’ “Imperial March” from Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back when the Away team comes onto the field, but this is one of the most WTF choices I’ve heard.

Yesterday on Seven’s WBBL coverage, they played “Foreign Land” by Eskimo Joe at least twice when batters were walking back to the stands after losing their wicket.
