Did They Really Just Play That?

Ugghhh! Disco Duck. An older cousin of mine says she remembers me dancing to that song when I was toddler.

Nothing against Mimi Webb, but just after 1:00pm while I was shopping at Westfield Liverpool this afternoon I heard her song ā€œLove Languageā€ through the centre’s speakers.

It is the second track off her sophomore album, ā€œConfessionsā€, which was released today last month.

Come to think of it, should we have a thread (or is there an existing one) dedicated to songs heard at shopping centres etc.? I know Woolies and Coles have digital stations that plays music when shoppers are at these respective supermarkets.

My Kmart has a decent mix of tracks it spins, no clue if each Kmart has K-Radio or if each store is playlisted individually

As far as I know, the Woolies/Coles radio stations are uniform (i.e. you would hear the same song at the same time if you were shopping at the Coles in Liverpool or Parramatta).

Its probably still in store ā€œradioā€ to some degree.

I don’t think that’s necessary

…But what is MediaSpy for if not to create spurious discussions on the minutiae of song selections at popular businesses?

You may as well nuke the site.

On Triple M Sydney and NSW Regional’s Rush Hour programme just before 5:00 PM, they played ā€œLose Controlā€ By Teddy Swims as Maroon and Hindy had Swims as their special guest who was doing his current tour of Australia and had performed at last week’s NRL Grand Final. I believe that this is probably one of the sole times (outside of MMM Perth) that the Triple M Network has played Swims’ discography although I’d love to hear his songs being played on the Regional MMMs rather than their playlist which has only songs released up to 2021.

Driving through Forster the other day, listening to 2RE in the afternoon… run of the mill songs from Matchbox 20, Kate Bush and Daryl Braithwaite….. then out of nowhere..

Baby Animals - Ain’t Gonna Get (a song I long forgot about. Peaked at #65 in 1992 according to Wikipedia), followed by Motley Crew - Kickstart My Heart

They did sound a little out of place, but it was a big surprise and great to hear those songs. It’s those instances that make radio worth listening to.

Yes, the 2RE local shifts are great for hearing unflogged songs.

I happened to hear P!nk’s ā€œU + UR Handā€ and ā€œSo Whatā€ as an entry on Triple M’s Greatest Lead Singers GOAT countdown, not only on the regional MMMs (via Triple M Newcastle) but ALSO on Triple M Sydney!

Perhaps the sole time I have heard P!NK on the Metro MMMs but the Regionals mostly play her discography almost every day of the week.

I recall Triple M Sydney playing her early hit ā€˜Don’t Let Me Get Me’ when she first came on the scene in 2001 but have rarely played her since.

Similar to when Jewel and Maroon 5 first came on the scene, Triple M Sydney played their early hits too (ā€˜Who Will Save Your Soul’ and ā€˜Harder to Breathe’ respectively) but again have rarely played them since.

Hard to tell if this is just a one off for the GOAT with Pink, or a hint at a playlist evolution.. time will tell.

Pink has been a mainstay of some ā€˜rock’ playlists such as B-Rock (pre Caralis) and I think I’ve even heard her on Rebel occasionally.

5:15pm on Nova yesterday: ā€œWhen You’re Goneā€ by Bryan Adams and Mel C

And just before 5:20pm today: ā€œAll These Things That I’ve Doneā€ by The Killers

Nothing against either song, but I had never previously heard them on Nova.

Just after 9:20pm on Triple M Nights with Dave Gleeson tonight: ā€œTo Be with Youā€ by Mr Big

Never heard this song on Triple M previously. The song was also covered by Human Nature for their 2004 album ā€œWalk the Tightropeā€.

The Regional Triple Ms play that a fair bit…

Also heard that song on Triple M 90s via LiSTNR a few times too, despite being considered a One Hit Wonder in most countries such as their home country of the US and Australia, Mr Big was absolutely massive in Japan.

Fox’s Fifi, Fev and Nick played Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas this morning. Mariah is in Australia as part of Fridayz Live tour, but I think it was a bit too early to play the song given it is still two months to Christmas.

Well you probably better not turn on your DAB Radio since there are already Christmas stations on air again!
