Scores level on 241 apiece after 50 overs.

It’s going to a Super Over!

Super over!

EVERYTHING has happened, so many twists and turns. And Federer v Djokovic is STILL on as well!

And that has gone to a super tie break I hear as well!

England have won the 2019 CWC in scintillating fashion! I was flicking when I could during Wimbledon breaks / change of ends. A tied result and super over to boot!! Amazing stuff for New Zealand and the Poms. It did drag on though, from just after 7:30pm-ish aest here, got riveting overnight.

As mentioned in the general “tennis” thead, super lucky both events landed on a night I ain’t working the following day, was magnificent overnight experience to enjoy. Not ideal both were at the same time and equally as thrilling.

But my blood pressure may need to be tested

New Zealand being monumentally screwed over by dumb rules reminds me why I stopped watching cricket

Also appalling that the final wasn’t played at the real home of cricket, the MCG

Neither side deserved to lose.
But there can only be 1 winner.

Interesting that boundaries were used as the count back mechanism.

NZ lost fewer wickets in making their 241, I would have thought wickets are more important than boundaries.

But we knew these were the rules.

Congratulations to England!

The four overthrows deflection off Stokes were costly in the end for NZ.

MCG hosted the last World Cup Final in 2015… ?

Firmly said tongue in cheek - although as an aside, I really don’t get the hype about Lords as a venue :man_shrugging:

Exactly. Same for Djokovic and Federer. It’s heartbreaking for the loser.

I have a Lords cricket ball, genuine and authentic. It’s pretty special.

Yeah I felt this was a bit ridiculous. Wouldn’t have minded England winning after a super over on the basis of being highest qualifier of the two, but to win on boundaries is absurd.

Wickets would have been a better tiebreak.

The controversial wet weather rule application 1992 semi final comes to mind this morning

What terrible luck for NZ. You couldn’t have dreamt that conclusion up if you tried.

I think it should have been a tie, with the trophy shared- the fairest outcome imo. The boundary countback rule that they used is silly and it should have been done on wickets lost in the Super Over instead (England would have won in this case, too).

That was an amazing match.

I feel though that wickets should be the first countback, it’s weird to see a team all out chasing given a win.

Greatest ODI of all time, no argument!

BTW, thought Ian Smith called the end of the game absolutely brilliantly.

I should have gotten out of bed to watch it, but am currently recording the 3 hour highlights package that is on FOX Cricket and will watch some of it tonight.

I agree, sounds like it was quite possibly the greatest game ever played, in ANY sport.

  • 4th time lucky for England.
  • First time Super Over used to determine the winner of a ODI.
  • England became the 3rd team in succession to win the World Cup at home (India, 2011 at Mumbai), (Australia, 2015 at Melbourne Cricket Ground), and England (2019, at Lords, London).
  • New Zealand back-to-back runner ups.
  • Crowd at Lords was a sellout.
  • Ben Stokes (ENG) deserves Man of the match for his 84*.

This is where Kayo is worth it for me; you can replay entire matches at your leisure, skipping slow passages in play and fast-forwarding the endless stoppages within play.

Yes- I’m not sure if we’ll ever see a game like it again. The UK has had a knack of producing the most thrilling encounters, possibly because its pitches are the most neutral with a bit in it for everyone. Australia has hosted a few classics too but not for some time (1993 Adelaide and 1996 Michael Bevan come to mind).

Thanks!

Didn’t realise you could replay entire matches on demand with Kayo.

I will have to look into that!

They also have a fantastic mini match feature where it’s basically an extended highlights package. And they showed every ball of the final over and super over in it.
