Why is he in trouble?
I donât understand why he is in trouble for it though. Men and Women refer to their work partners or friends as work husbands/wives all the time.
It was misleading, I know women sometimes refer to their female friends as âgirlfriendsâ even though they are not in a relationship as such.
He may have meant it like that. Men donât use such terms, itâs usually just friend or mate that they use to refer to as a male friends.
He can use what ever terms he wants. It was the media getting carried away about their first openly gay sports start in cricket. He can use that term all he likes and shouldnât cause controversy. He didnât do it a discriminative way. And it to be honest it is nice that he can speak like that about a male friend anyway. Too often we want our men to be traditional âmenâ.
I think this one was a classic example of outrage for the sake of outrage⌠he made a joke, wasnât anything that bad or controversial and no different to like the work wife/husband jokes as above and then people want it to blow up simply to tear down/tarnish his career for no real purpose or gain.
I use the phrase man date all the time. Does not mean I am gay.
Coming from a gay man I have no issue what so ever with what he said. And I think Peter Helliar said it right during the show tonight. The more we spark outrage over trivial matters the more the the right will go right and the left go left. Its not healthy. It was a joke. If it was a netball player that said she was having a date with her girlfriend we wouldnât have any outrage at all.
If anything the whole affair shows how poor journalism has become when stories are constructed from unverified social media posts.

Former batsman David Hussey was yesterday appointed the new head coach of BBL team Melbourne Stars, replacing Stephen Fleming who quit after the team won the 2018-19 BBL title.
With their knowledge of sandpaper they could go on House Rules?
Donât forget they know a bit about yellow tape too!
That could come in handy on âHouse Rulesâ too
As for the booing and name calling, they are going to have to get used to it for a while. Particularly from spectators, not so much from opposition players.
When it comes to the Cricket World Cup, some English fans will without a doubt boo and criticise at Steve Smith and David Warner during the match as they are on the crease. Even though Steve Smith and David warner have learnt their lessons from the ball tampering scandal in Cape Town last year, they still have issues with their attitudes.
Cameron Bancroft has learnt his lesson from the ball tampering scandal already and he will be settled in positively in the FIrst Ashes Test.
Warner in particular can be a bit hot headed, not sure if heâll be able to stay out of controversy, time will tell.
Smith is better equipped to handle it, I think he has a more mature personality.
Thatâs assuming he even gets in the squadâŚ
