Australia won the three-match T20 womenâs series against West Indies 2-1, beating the tourists by 47 runs in game 3 at Allan Border Field in Brisbane tonight. Sent in to bat, Australia made 9/190 from their 20 overs with Tahlia McGrath the top scorer with 60. In reply, the Windies put on a 97-run opening stand, thanks again to captain Hayley Matthews, who made 79 despite being severely hampered by a right quad injury. But after she was caught at cover off Darcie Brownâs bowling, the Windies lost their next nine wickets for 45 to be all out for 143 with one ball left in the innings.
Matthews was named player of the match for her innings of 79 and also player of the series for making 99 not out in game 1 (Australia won by eight wickets) and 132 in game 2, which was the highest successful run chase in womenâs T20 cricket history with the Windies chasing down the home sideâs 6/212 and winning by seven wickets. She was also named player of the match for both games.
The Marylebone Cricket Club has expelled a member at the centre of the altercations with Australian players at Lordâs during the second Ashes Test in July following a months-long investigation.
Two other members involved have also been suspended with the individuals unlikely to be able to appeal against the decision.
The unbroken 273-run partnership between Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra for the second wicket is the highest partnership for New Zealand in a World Cup.
India won gold in the Asian Games menâs T20 tournament in Hangzhou on Saturday, after the final against Afghanistan was washed out. Bangladesh beat Pakistan in the bronze medal play off.
Fraser-McGurk was named player of the match for his record breaking innings, however his effort was in vain as South Australia lost their final four wickets for 10 runs to be bowled out for 398, losing to Tasmania by 37 runs.
833 runs were scored across two innings in todayâs match.
A disappointing 199 from AUS against India in their World Cup match tonight.
Australia were going along okay at 2-110, when they lost 5-30 to be in the deep and murky at 7-140. A lower order rescue mission has restored some level of respectability, but I suspect it wonât be enough.
India ended up winning by 6 wickets and 8.4 overs to spare (4/201 in the 42nd over).
It was looking like Australia might cause a real upset early on, when India lost their first 3 wickets for just 2 runs! Sharma, Kishsn and Iyer all made ducks. Kohli and Rahul then put on 165 for the 4th wicket to get India out of trouble.
Sports journalist Mark Gottlieb yesterday posted on his Twitter about the availability of venues for cricket matches during Brisbane 2032.
Cricket at #Brisbane2032 is fascinating. Obviously most of the tournament would be held nationwide like football but where do you play the final? At the Gabba? The same place where athletics is? Would that mean youâd need a drop in pitch? Some would be very unhappy about that.
One solution is to just play it at the MCG (though not playing cricket at a new $2.7b cricket ground seems crazy) but #Brisbane2032 is smack bang in the middle of AFL season. What other stadiums would be made available that arenât being used for Aussie Rules? A complete mess.
Surely this gives the Lions hopes for the Showgrounds redevelopment a boost because that is an option (though it would be a small ground for cricket) or the other option is an even further development of AB (Allan Border) Field.
They moved footy seasons for Sydney2000 but a lot has changed in 23 years. The TV rights for the footy codes have grown massively. The cost to moving their seasons is huge for the footy codes and any compensation for moving them would need to be just as big.
Couldnât be done at the Gabba, would have to be MCG or similar. Heritage Bank or the northern grounds could host along with Alan Border Field. Darwin etc. too. The AFL would accommodate the Olympics.
It canât be done at the MCG unless the AFL agrees to move its matches from the ground. It will take at least two weeks for drop-in pitches to settle in (a new one was installed this week for the Sheffield Shield clash between Victoria and NSW starting October 26) and a week to remove the pitch and return the turf to footy conditions.
But again for the Olympics they will probably be happier to make a change. Theyâd still have heaps of other venues available to play games at. Stack of Marvel games and Melbourne teams away (and maybe Carlton hosts at IKON etc.) Youâd just have to play two games a day on the ground. The only risk would be with rain.
I think they will use Queensland cricket stadiums including North Queensland.
Finals will most likely be held at Heritage Bank Stadium on the Gold Coast. Other venues include Allan Border Field (which could be upgraded (A Letter to the Queensland Cricket Community | Queensland Cricket). North Queensland stadiums including Riverway Stadium, Cazalyâs Stadium and Great Barrier Reef Arena. That provides five stadiums who can host double headers each day too. Allows Mackay to be involved in hosting the games and adds to Townsville and Cairnsâ schedules too.
Then again with the work that is meant to be going on with the Gaba and the fact itâs still 9 years away some new complete set-up idea could come out between now and then some you never knowâŚ
Australia are now second last on the World Cup table, after losing to South Africa by 134 runs in Lucknow overnight. Australia dropped six catches in the South African innings of 7/311.
Looking forward to IND v PAK tonight, a crowd of up to 130,000 expected in Ahmedabad. The lack of regular contests between the 2 countries makes this even more interesting.
Anticipating an Indian win, but hope the Pakis put up a good fight
