And they will refuse to reschedule too! I’m very frustrated as my team (stars) are the only team in the comp to have each of their games washed out! Hope kit doesn’t cost us come the pointy end of the season especially seeing we were on top for both of the first two matches that were rained out

I don’t think they’ll be able to reschedule. They’ve already had to move games from Blacktown to Sydney Showground Stadium (always was, always will be, fuck the Giants) to accommodate the Indian men’s team so they can train safely. I’d assume the Sydney Olympic Park bubble is only booked for a set period of time as well, so rescheduling might not be a possibility.

You can’t control the weather unless you build a dome and play under that. And I don’t trust our state government to build one successfully.

That’s the problem when CA creates the WBBL bubble in a single city, that it will be at the mercy of the weather.

Exactly. Can’t control the weather. At least my team is undefeated.

I hate that if rain is forecast they still always play the match out as a T20 until rain first occurs.

Look at the radar, and mutually agree a 5 or 10 over match if it’s likely to be washed out otherwise.

This is also where flexi-scheduling would work, like happens in Major League Baseball. Rain/storms coming in at 3pm when the game is due to start? Move the fixture to 11am etc.
It’s not a perfect solution (for broadcasters, fans) but it would see games completed more.

That could work, but I’d think they might upset some fans who do come out and support the women’s comp (including yours truly, who was there on Saturday, but not today due to feeling unwell), as you’d have to plan and so forth. Already there are some odd times, like Wednesdays, which work for the streamers but not for those who want to come out. That’s not to say don’t experiment with it but there are pitfalls to weigh up.

I just don’t understand what the harm is playing in rain for big bash.

It’d be the same for any other type of cricket - the pitch. Given it has to be reused for not just the WBBL, but eventually the BBL at the Showground, and at Drummoyne and Blacktown, you’ve gotta look after it.

Simple solution - play all games at Marvel Stadium and shut the roof to avoid any rain.

Two problems - no one forecast this much rain in Sydney in October/November, and Marvel Stadium is in Melbourne - given the situation when the WBBL was being planned, it’s self-explanatory.

Is there no way of making water proof pitches for big bash games?

No, can’t be done, even synthetic pitches are affected by rain and it’s not just the pitch that is a problem when wet. the outfield, run ups, the ball, swinging a bat, visibility etc are all affected.

Big Bash already play in much heavier rain than international, first class and list A matches, I dare say they can’t do any further.

But does it matter if all these things are affected in the rain? Isn’t this a game for fans? Or are you saying it’s a health and safety issue. I just think the point of the big bash is to play it for the fans. Having a rain affected game isn’t ideal for the fans. The other forms are fair enough.

Yes. Have you ever played cricket?

Yes I have. Competitively for a few years. I’ve also played in the rain. Just don’t understand how this can’t be adapted to play in the rain considering it’s the fans form.

Then you should understand the inherent danger of playing in the rain. It can be done to a point before the pitch and outfield becomes unplayable and the ball uncontrollable. The only solution would be to play indoors, at least you could keep a natural playing surface.

I understand the dangers I don’t understand with the current technology and solutions how we cannot find a way to make it work. Even as some suggested with a rolling and adaptable fixture.

Yes. That would help to get a result, but difficult for fans attending the matches on watching an home.

Should also be noted there was thunder in the surrounding areas too. Big health and safety issues there.
