ABC Radio commentary team for the Australia-India test series this summer

So based upon that with Jim, Harsha and Alli being the main trio, I’m trying to work out who acts as the 4th ball by bal caller for Adelaide given Q will be Brisbane only, Clint in Perth, Gibs (Moore) in Sydney and Corbin for Boxing Day (Melbourne based)…

Could be a Corbin double up? Given he’s their chief year-round presenter of the podcast?

Nice to see SEN 1170 taking India v NZ last night (it’s a cracker of a game). Had to switch over after talkSOCCER went to a, you guessed it (natch).

Huh?

I was listening to the cricket on talkSPORT direct, then they went to some unimportant soccer game so I then switched to SEN. I jocularly refer to them as talkSOCCER due to the dominance of that sport in the UK.

SENZ are taking the talkSPORT2 coverage; I was surprised to find it on SEN 1170 as well.

Australian men’s team begins their 2024/25 home summer next Monday (Melbourne Cup eve) with the first ODI against Pakistan at the MCG. This will be the first international match broadcast by the ABC, SEN and Triple M under the new seven-year deal with Cricket Australia.

GET SET FOR A MASSIVE SUMMER OF CRICKET WITH AUSTRALIA’S BEST COMMENTARY TEAM ON TRIPLE M AND LiSTNR

Having signed a new, seven-year agreement that retained Triple M Network’s exclusive FM metro broadcast rights and digital audio and metro DAB+ rights for cricket, Triple M has now unveiled its unrivalled cricket commentary team for summer.

For the first time in Australia, India will take on the Aussies across five Test matches and Triple’s M stellar commentary line up will be there for every ball, boundary and wicket. Leading the network’s ‘first XI’ commentary team is cricketing icon, former Australian captain and Triple M’s Mark Taylor AO, who will be joined behind the mic by James Brayshaw and Mark Howard along with Australian cricketers Merv Hughes, Greg Blewett, Mark Waugh AM, Brad Haddin, Callum Ferguson and Isabelle Westbury. The line up is bolstered by international cricket royalty Lord Ian Botham OBE and Triple M’s Dan Ginnane, with further names to be announced soon.

Throughout a hot summer of cricket, Triple M and LiSTNR will broadcast the Australian men’s international games played in Australia, including Tests, One Day Internationals and T20 internationals, and the three Australian women’s T20 international games against England. The games will be broadcast on Triple M stations in the five metro cities and are available to stream on LiSTNR, meaning cricket fans never have to miss a minute of the action on Triple M.

The first match to be broadcast on Triple M and streamed on LiSTNR will be played on Monday, 4 November, when the Australian men’s team takes on Pakistan in a One Day International at the MCG.

Mark Taylor AO said: “I’m looking forward to what will be an exciting summer of cricket, both on the field and in the Triple M commentary box. The cricket will no doubt be very competitive with the Aussies looking to avenge recent series losses to India here in Australia. I’m personally looking forward to watching it all unfold and the fun that we will have commentating on it. Bring it on!”

SCA Head of Sports Content, Ewan Giles, said: “Triple M’s cricket coverage this summer is going to be huge. We have five tests of the Aussies v India, the one-day-ers and T20 games. Plus, the team is excited to be calling the women’s matches. Whilst it gets hot out on the pitch, it also heats up in the commentary box and I know the team is fired up for the first match next week when the Aussies take on Pakistan in the day-night One Day International.”

Don’t miss a moment of Triple M Rocks Cricket across the metro Triple M network and also hear it all anytime, anywhere on LiSTNR. To catch the cricket action on LiSTNR, simply download the LiSTNR app and sign-up to listen for free.

Yes, easily the best caller on the team since Guha!

Looking at the ABC’s live sport guide, it appears that (except for SA and for Tasmania during the evening), ABC Local Radio won’t be taking Monday’s first ODI (or the first innings of Friday’s second ODI).

I can understanding taking normal programming over the cricket in places like Sydney and Melbourne where SEN and Triple M are also providing coverage, but in a lot of regional areas I think there will be a few unpleasantly surprised people on Monday.

Would this be the first time the ABC has not taken a home Australian cricket match live on Local Radio across most of the country during the main cricket season i.e. after the AFL/NRL has wrapped up? (except where superseded by emergency broadcasts which are of course much more important)

I’d agree here, i wonder if the only reason they are taking normal programming over the cricket in places like Sydney and Melbourne where SEN and Triple M are also providing coverage is ABC doing it in full on digital radio?

Matt Clinch confirmed on Grandstand this afternoon that ABC Radio was changing its approach with its coverage this summer, that not every international match would be broadcast on Local Radio. He did say that every match would be heard on ABC Listen app. He also said Jason Gillespie (current coach of Pakistan men’s test team) was supposed to be on the ABC’s commentary team for the first ODI between Australia and Pakistan tomorrow, instead Jason would be in the Pakistan coaching box. Jason was appointed Pakistan’s one-day team on an interim basis, taking over from Gary Kirsten who resigned last week.

Yeah I think it symbolises that these one dayers are dieing when they have no meaning outside the world cup. Even internalional T20s are a bit of an after thought. Looks like for short form cricket franchise cricket is the future. Then every one joins together for some world cups.

Yeah it’s a sad incitement on the landscape. I prefered T20 when it was in small doses. Now We’re being force fed it

Its a definite transformation which I am not sure those cricketers from during the world series conflict would have anticipated .

Not sure if it is always positive. I know that for TV Rights they don’t show FTA mens one day international cricket yet women cricket they do. I don’t understand why not both or neither (they are both behind the paywall. This confuses me. I know that has been discussed a lot of this forum. This is a modern phenomena not that women play cricket that is good, its that they put men behind a paywall. Perhaps it is cricket Australia overpricing mens cricket or pay tv paying for the exclusivity for the mens.

Anyway back to radio , I appreciate we can hear cricket now on multiple stations now so more choice and with apps its not such a big deal its not on analog radio.

SEN chief sports caller, Gerard Whateley, will lead the team, supported by Adam White, Andy Maher, Tom Morris and David Lithgow. SEN experts across the series will include fan favourites Damien Fleming and Bharat Sundaresan, former Australian Test captain Tim Paine, ICC Hall of Famer Lisa Sthalekar, Perth Scorchers coach and former Test star Adam Voges, plus SEN regulars Darren Berry, Brad Hogg, Chadd Sayers and Brett Geeves.

To me it seems like the ABC is doing all it can to push people towards the Listen app just to be able to listen to things that they’ve been able to listen to for decades on analog Local Radio.

Fair enough in the cities where there’s DAB+ and mobile coverage is generally a non-issue (not to mention commercial rivals also taking the coverage), but out in the country the Listen app is not necessarily a smooth experience (especially if listening on the road).

I can just about put up with the T20s and ODIs being not consistently covered on Local Radio (or another analog option), remains to be seen if they do the same for the Tests. I would dearly hope that the Tests are still considered important enough by the ABC to warrant analog coverage nationwide (be it Local Radio, NewsRadio, or even RN if they wish to broaden it’s format).
