I’m definitely not planing a trip anytime soon other than going to NSWs in the near future. States and territories closing their borders like this is utter rubbish.
Oh, Gladys wanting every state to follow NSW lead. Please. Give me a spell
I think Gladys made a wise decision on this occasion. You can’t just open and shut state borders all the time at short notice.
I’ve just had a look at ABC News and it seems that SA Health is very confident that the cases are pretty much all linked to the hotel worker with ‘strong positives coming from the machine’ - presumably referring to the genomic sequencing of the strain of those infected. If they can stamp out the source and trace anyone even remotely linked to the source then that’s a good start.
Also the picture of a long line of people going for testing at the new Parafield pop-up testing site is very good to see. At least most people aren’t taking any chances. However because it’s in the Northern suburbs I’m slightly concerned that some might not take it as seriously as others.
I think we should follow Victoria’s lead a state that hasn’t closed once.
I do agree with her though. It’s clear the other states are not confident in their own contact tracing teams.
Victoria has declared SA a hotspot.
Premier Andrews is not looking at closing the VIC/SA border though.
Which makes sense. And this is what the other states should be implementing instead.
I agree. This is what all states should be doing. But we also need to be defining what a hotspot is.
Agree. I wouldn’t feel confident planning any holiday anywhere now with how quickly things can change. Ironically was just discussing a potential SA trip over New Years with friends on the weekend…
There needs to be a better approach than just shutting borders when a cluster pops up. Vic approach seems more logical. Hopefully this fizzes out, gets under control quickly and is an overreaction by the states. The response on borders just increases the feeling of uncertainty.
VICs approach here is the right one - interview on arrival, rapid test
WA, TAS, NT slamming the border shut is the wrong approach - we will never be one unified country again if that’s the approach but clearly we’re not all ever going to be on the same wave length - individual premiers and states are wielding the power they have in a way that will ultimately hurt the national economy.
In a global pandemic, we can’t ever expect elimination. SA have just proven that and NZ have had 2 outbreaks since apparently eliminating the virus - this is why rules must remain - masks indoors, caps on venue capacity etc.
I think you have to wait to see the full details of Victoria’s response to the the SA outbreak. There are more details to come so that people planning travel can decide whether to fly to Melbourne. I think it will be a closed border to Adelaide in everything but name.
Based on whats out it doesn’t state quarantine being a feature.

Meanwhile ACT Health has advised Canberrans to reconsider non-essential travel to South Australia.

Just drove past a COVID testing site near the local Coles and there’s a massive line-up of cars outside the clinic. Very good to see people working cooperatively with regards to testing.
It would be ridiculous if that happened. They never closed to NSW why would they suddenly close for one cluster. Even QLD closing their borders. SA never closed their borders to them when they had some clusters either. Elimination was never the strategy.
I think its far too early to tell who has the right and wrong strategy, in 2 weeks from now if WA, NT, Qld and Tas do not have an outbreak and Vic, ACT & NSW do then the decisive action on border closures will be justified.
I completely understood why states closed to us in Vic when we had an outbreak, i think we should do the same to SA. Anyone that plans an interstate holiday during a pandemic should have known there was a significant risk of this happening and shouldn’t be complaining now.
edit: I just saw the wording Gladys used in her press conference, she is leaving the possibility of closing the border wide open, i give it 24hrs.
Exactly this, for the cases to have gone from 4 to 17 in a day, there’s a high chance we’ll see 3 figures in a couple days once more widespread testing has been completed. If this does come to pass, I have no doubt that all states and territories will close borders to SA despite what some users on here think will happen.
