COVID-19: New Zealand Lockdown

Have NZ said anything about measures against Omicron?

Hotel isolation for a group of seven countries (full 14 day cycle) and only NZ citizens from there can enter NZ (tbh, wouldn’t have been many other applicant). But I suspect it’ll have to tighten further.

It isn’t cruel. It’s the best way to slow the spread of the virus.

People have become so used to easy travel, they’ve forgotten how it was before the 2000’s. It was very rare for people to zip across the Tasman on a weekend, let alone for a holiday every year.

I grew up seeing half of my grandparents for a week or two every 2-3 years, and that was just going from the South Island to the North Island.

I don’t think border restrictions are cruel, people need to be realistic. In saying that though, there have been occasional cases where I think the MoH could have been a bit kinder or more flexible, but on the whole, I wouldn’t complain, the strategy has done what it was designed to do, namely save lives.

It’s cruel now. When there are many more cases in the Auckland community than have been coming via MIQ for 3 months. Plus more and more cases popping up around the country. Yes for high risk countries it should still be in place but double-vaxxed, negative testing people makes little sense.

Perhaps I’m speaking from a position of privilege but if there was a major life event that meant I needed to travel quickly, I could still do it. These people travelling to NZ aren’t people wanting to go on holidays, they’re people wanting to spend time with sick family/grieve, take up new jobs, resettle in NZ.

Sometimes individuals have to suck it up for the greater good though, eh?

And it’s better to open things up gradually, as is the current plan. It allows time to adjust things, to see how transmission is spreading, and to reduce any shock to the health system (reducing sudden surges).

With NZ into the traffic light system now I’m locking this up. Can re-open if something major happens.
