COVID-19: Impact on Sports & Culture (What do I now do on the weekends?)

Given that the situation has become a bit more concerning… I would dare say the justification is justified.

Melbourne’s Moomba Festival has been scrapped this year siting Covid-19 and Melbourne’s lockdown to blame

Very disappointing decision.

I don’t understand why they couldn’t just push the event back to spring (Sep/Oct/Nov)?

It’s an overreaction to scrap it all together.

According to the Mayor, the Victorian Water Ski Association pulled out of the festival this week, while some interstate suppliers were unable to commit to the event in the wake of the five-day “circuit-breaker” in Victoria which ended today.

Sounds like the final straw on top of no parade and no birdman rally. Just leaves the carnival rides and hopefully they’ll be booked out later in the year on the show circuit.

The council runs it, so the council cancelled it. No one told Martin Pakula and he got upset.

So pretty much everything except the parade, water skiing and birdman rally.

The Sunday Telegraph today reveals the changes made to this year’s Sydney Royal Easter Show. The showbag hall, rides, food and animal shows will all be back, but public transport won’t be included in the ticket price. Instead people are asked to pre-book show tickets and parking to meet contact tracing requirements. There will also be COVID marshals, plus wider aisles and separate entry and exit points for each venue.

If the Sydney Royal Easter Show goes ahead this year (I still have doubts myself), personally I wonder how they’re going to do the Showbag launch for the media?

One would presume they’d have to divert from the usual format of having a couple of hundred kids from the Children’s Hospitals & Royal Far West in the same room…

All matches of the Constellation Cup netball series, which starts tomorrow (March 2), will now be played in Christchurch behind closed doors due to COVID-19 alert level two for the rest of the country.

Three frontline workers had been honoured as Moomba monarchs for 2021.

In all honesty I wouldn’t mind if some level of ‘social distancing’ or reduced capacity remains in place post-COVID. Don’t get me wrong I understand that these have impacts on businesses, however I would gladly pay a bit more for a ticket to something if it meant not being crammed in.

A good example was on Friday I went to Tommy Little’s Comedy Showcase at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl. That venue now has a full socially distanced setup and it was great. We had our own table, QR codes for ordering etc. It made it a far more enjoyable experience IMO. My previous memories of the Bowl were being crammed in right up with the front with barely any room to move. I’ll take this current setup any day.
