COVID-19: Greater Sydney & NSW Re-Opens

Wow! In that case I’m glad I’m in Europe.

Haha ok, I’m sure virus-stricken wintery Europe is proving to be so much better than a competently governed island continent with a tiny amount of community transmission where the population have happily sacrificed their personal freedoms to protect the vulnerable.

Get off it, seriously…?

Good luck with that. Couldn’t think of a worse place to be. All I can say, is stay safe.

I’ve got friends and family in the UK wishing they were back in Australia and have stated how bad the government has been there and the current state of the country. Sorry mate, but you’re in la la land if you think that.

You aren’t in Europe you are in the UK :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Pick your poison though; Australia is a much worse country to be in as far as climate change goes. I’d rather be in western Europe/UK or the northern US/Canada from that perspective. The current pandemic may seem quaint by comparison if we don’t get our act together, but that’s for another day.

New Zealand would be my country of choice to escape both the pandemic and AGW impacts. If I only thought of myself I’d seriously consider relocating.

I do not like how regional NSW gets thrown in the same boat as Sydney as far as restrictions go, but you have to draw the line somewhere. There is a strong case for towns abutting the ACT such as Bungendore and Yass to be treated the same way as Canberra; I would not go as far as Goulburn, though.

I can see the appeal of being in ‘Europe’ as well. I know we are in a great position when it comes to case numbers. However, I believe Europe will be in a much better position come June. Most of Europe will have built some sense of herd immunity with the vaccine rolling out and will go to a sense of normality. I think that is going to be a lot harder to achieve here in Australia and I don’t think we will get a sense of ‘normality’ for quite some time. And I know some will say I don’t care I can do things in my own country. But having the borders shut for such a long time isn’t going for our economy, tourism industry and job growth not to mention the fact that a fair amount of people have got loved ones outside of Australia.

“Tougher” but not tough enough. I think this is going to get far worse. It’s going to be a disaster. Lots of people think so. Admittedly I just got back from the Pub in hunters hill and it was virtually empty on a dud at afternoon during lunch time. So many people staying home it seems.

What? After 3/4 days testing it’s still only on the Northern Beaches. Why are you thinking it’s going to get worse?

Just a fear. I’m not convinced our response has been hard enough.

I honestly think the type of restrictions coming into force now are the sort of thing we really should’ve had in place after the Crossroads cluster back in July.

Stay positive. It could have been a lot worse at this point. It’s now been 5 days since this was discovered. So many people have been tested in those 5 days and we still haven’t had high positive testing numbers. I think if we can keep the numbers under 40/50 over the next week and keep it on the northern beaches as it still is after 5 days, then we will be fine. This outbreak could still go away as fast as it came.

QLD border closing to greater Sydney from 1am tomorrow. Declared hotspot - the area where NSW has put increased restrictions into place. Queenslanders can return home to self quarantine. 15 people in Queensland have been in close contact with people who have tested positive in NSW.

I certainly hope so. I just don’t trust people. They are stupid and they don’t listen. I want nothing more to be sitting at my family’s Xmas on Friday and we don’t live on the northern beaches.

A cop on Today this morning mentioned they were stopping people at Terrey Hills who were entering and exiting the Northern Beaches and questioning them. That’s a good thing that I didn’t expect them to be doing.

How long I wonder? Be at least 4 weeks I think. Although last time it was a few months. Taking into account no elections on the horizon, give Sydney 2-3 weeks to get rid of it, and then the 2-3 weeks of maintaining zero community transmission.

There goes half of Qantas capacity overnight.

Mascot will be at a standstill.

I have seen photos of an open drawbridge at The Spit; I’m unsure if it’s a hoax though.

The Spit Bridge drawbridge opens a number of times during the day to let tall yachts pass through.

I’m aware of that, and that was my first reaction to the photo. Couldn’t see the tall yacht but I’m sure it was approaching

It opens six times on weekdays and eight times on weekends. There are scheduled times, whether there are boats with tall masts waiting or not.
