COVID-19: Discussion of Impact 😷

watching Greg Hunt on 7.30 earlier just made me angry

“Why have you not set any goals for the vaccine roll-out?”

“Well we have set goals… we started Phase 1a in February… we started 1b in March”

Seriously… starting the roll-out is not a goal. The one goal they did set, 4 million vaccinated by the end of March, was a dismal failure.

“Why is the prime minister issuing vaccine messages on Facebook when he told us not to use Facebook for vaccine news?”

“Oh that was just some message to address some sort of rumours… and he is fronting up to a media conference last week and 12 months ago when we closed the border with China” Like, what?? This is supposed to make us feel comfortable that this lot know what they are doing.

They’re ballsing it up every step of the way.

With the vaccine rollout in disarray, i think international borders will be closed well into 2022. I wonder if anyone would propose something like a 2 week travel purge.

For 2 weeks in June we open the floodgates to the 36000 Australian citizens, permanent residents, work visa holders, critical skill shortage workers and international students. they all home quarantine instead of hotel. Even with good testings and compliance checks we would concede we will have to go into a 14 day national lockdown after it to repair the damage. Then borders close again for the next 12 months.

that’s the only flaw. We know people can’t be trusted.

Far cry from the original supposition that the federal Gov were planning an October election, on the back of their successful delivery of a vaccine, with the idea that people would sweep them back in to thank them.

It will be interesting if the Tas government see the same style of covid handling bump that other state governments have had - owing to the opposition there being largely supportive, compared to the WA/Qld situations.

We’re probably closer to the point where overseas vaccination programs are so good we could require returned citizens to prove full dose vaccination and then home quarantine.

I know, you’d factor that into the risk calculation. And accept that the virus will escape. That’s why you have the 14 day lockdown. You’d go back to hotel quarantine after the purge.

Can we really function with just 5000 people flying in to the country per week for another 18 months+?

What other option do we have? Let COVID run rampant through the older demographics and hope its someone else’s granny/mum and not mine?

The point of my idea is that it is an example of another option. There is every chance our current strategy leaves someone’s granny overseas with a much greater chance to die of covid.

Exactly. This was nothing more than hoping like hell that things would be getting back to relative normality and we’d all be lovey-dovey over ScoMo and his band of idiots. But, things didn’t go to plan, and they’ve not had a plan B through Z. They’re being found out. Nothing more than politics rather than, you know, HELPING PEOPLE.

Now they’ll hold out on a election for as long as they possibly can, thinking we have short memories. Albo would be going into this like Steven Bradbury, hoping they all fall over at the last hurdle and he goes skating over the finish line as a winner.

They should have thought this through. They haven’t. Now they’re being caught with their pants down. This should be end of ScoMo.

The worst thing is… this is what they thought through. And that they could get away with it.

All of Scomo’s somewhat alright efforts in the early stages of the pandemic is now all undone thanks to him and his government’s over reliance on the now risky AstraZeneca vaccine and their mismanagement over the vaccine rollout.

He repeats the same old rhetorics every media conference yet his government never come up with anything productive. Unbelievable.

That won’t happen. UK cases won’t drop much below 2K. Lots of things opened today. Malls, shops. Gym. Outdoor dining and drinkingAs long as hospitalizations and deaths Don’t surge everyone feels comfortable with cases rising - 60% of people vaccinated now - combined with the millions who already have antibodies - hospitals should not be overwhelmed again

Borders are very tight. Very. Ñot Australia tight. But tighter than any non Asian nation

2000 cases a day and 1.5 million tests a day (UK)

I really didn’t think the UK would get to that position. I didn’t think Boris had it in him but his vaccination plan has been outstanding to date. Although there is going to be repercussions for the second dose. My friend was due to get her second jab this week and they have now pushed it back to July.

I think your friends anecdotal story is Not at all
Indicative of the national situation. Most of the doses being give. Now are Second doses - first doses are the minority now @turdall

I expect cases to rise from here through summer but not hospitalizations and deaths - which is becoming the barromator now

Oh I am not doubting most are second doses. I am saying they promised the 6 week timeframe but a lot of people are being pushed out by weeks, some even months. Which is to be expected considering they went so hard so early. And again 1 dose is better than 0.

I read every single official stat on the vaccine rollout here. I’ve not read or heard of “a lot of people” having second shot delayed by weeks or months. It’s not been reported at all here. That’s News to me and I consume every piece of Covid News I can find

Really? With the 4 month lockdown and the vaccine rollout it was bound to happen. It’s science and fact. Proof is in the pudding.

The UK is concerning looking at instagram stories, it seems like everyone there is acting as if the pandemic is over. Early December all over again.
UK has fully vaccinated less than half of the per capita amount as Michigan, and UK is using a weaker vaccine. Michigan is in the middle of a huge and fast spreading surge, Their graph looks the same as it did in early November before the vaccinations started. If Michigan was so unprotected and nowhere near herd immunity then so is the UK.

It’s concerning, but they are currently in a different boat with almost 60% of adults vaccinated. They should be able to open slowly but safely.

It’s interesting that their easement on restrictions (plan out) resembles what Victorian and Melbourne did back in October.

The UK seems to have taken a lot inspiration from Australia and New Zealand. Good too see that we’re all learning from one another in different situations around the globe.

I do believe in the near future the UK and Australia will be the first European county to form a safe travel pathway for both both countries. Most likely at the beginning of 2022.
