COVID-19: Discussion of Impact 😷

Exactly. The scope of people that can receive it currently is very small. It will surely ramp up very quickly when more people have access to it.

it think the bigger problem with Australia’s vaccine plan is that we seem completely out of talks to make new deals, we’ve stagnated on the few arrangements made early in the pandemic.
There are great new vaccines out there and the existing good vaccines are making new production and distribution deals. Its going to be a real issue if AstraZenneca turns out to be the dud against new variants and Australia’s strategy is so heavily reliant on it.

Moderna is one of the best vaccines on the market and the J&J vaccine is being approved around the world with big pharma companies partnering for mass production. There are third world countries that are on the ball making good deals with them, where is Australia?

Oh dear, I think the run of days without community transmission in NSW is about to come to an end…

It’ll come down to when Phase III trials of Novavax are done and whether they turn out to be effective. If so, that’s another 50 million doses guaranteed and the over-reliance on the AZ vaccine won’t be such a concern.

Why, because there’s a whole bunch of overseas derived hotel quarantine cases in one day?

If that’s the case you’re really reaching, actually come across as if you’re fearmongering.

Stop spreading unwarranted fear.

It’s not the first time.

I would’ve thought a double digit number of cases was something to be pretty concerned about, especially if it’s an indication the virus has been spreading in the hotel quarantine system!

Or maybe it’s just that by chance more returned travellers carried the virus on their journey and tested positive in hotel.

its a fair statement, 12 people is 3% of the daily traveler intake, much higher than the global average. It would be a huge coincidence for them to all contract it separately overseas, especially since it is now mandatory to test negative before boarding a flight. It should be asked whether they contracted it in the quarantine system, which i think would be more likely and has happened before.

That means more Aussies will be able to return home.

More than 4,600 international arrivals have quarantined at the centre

hmm, all of the sudden Howard Springs does not seem that impressive. 4600 is a pretty small number. NSW/Vic have accepted about that amount in a single week at some points.

It’s because the only people that are going to Howard Springs are those that arrive on chartered Qantas flights (Darwin hasn’t had any other scheduled international arrivals since April).

I would hope if they’re increasing the capacity of the centre that they’re also going to bump up the number of chartered repatriation flights otherwise it’s all for nothing.

The NSW Health tweet quite clearly states “Twelve new cases were acquired overseas”

Look I still don’t think Hotel Quarantine is the safest place. And it would be naive to think that no spread is occurring in these facilities. But we know it is all contained and they are testing HQ workers regularly so any case in HQ should make us all feel safe and not too worried.
