71 new casesā€¦ ā€œStill assessing the dateā€

Come onā€¦ close the suburbs down now.

Agreed, I think this has gone too far now. If we want to bring down the case numbers, this is the logical step in the right direction.

Bring our state back into lockdown.
That is a shocking number.

Its now spreading into other suburbsā€¦ the damage is being done and other spot fires are showing up everywhere. And as a Victorian, Iā€™m all for the NSWs breaking away from Victoria (I completely understand). The way I see itā€¦ Victoria now needs to go back into a lockdown.

Yep, NSW should just shut the borders down. Lockdown seemed to work the first time, so sounds like a good idea to do it again.

It is actually a pleasing number. It means they are testing and tracing those outbreaks from a few weeks ago. If Victoria came out with 12 new cases today I would be more concerned that 71.

NSW shutting the border with Victoria will affect people living along the Murray River, especially Mildura, Echuca and Wodonga.

Correctā€¦ but at the moment with the borders open its having a bigger affect on the nation as a whole.

Is there cases of community transmission from Victoria to NSW though at the moment?

Closing the NSWs border will allow the rest of the country to open up until Victoria gets this under control.

Yeah but there are huge implication to closing a border when there has been no transmission from state to state. We have seen how long it took for them open up the borders in the first place. And to be fair most of the cases havenā€™t come from state to state but rather cruise ships and international flights.

Understand, but try telling that to all the other sates that are inclined to open their borders due to the Victorian situation.

Yeah I do understand that. The issue is people havenā€™t really been listening to the social distancing rules. So I can see why the states are hesitant with allowing people from Victoria to other states. People are still going to work sick, planning on travelling even though they have been told not to and hugging on the streets. There are a lot of issues with the way people havenā€™t adapted to the new norms. But I still think there is a better way to manage the spread than closing the borders and breaking the constitution.

Exactly. The good thing is that there are only 9 people in hospital at the moment, which hopefully indicates they are finding most cases. We have to expect numbers to remain similar the next few days too as the blitz results come in and they trace contacts ,but hopefully will then drop off.

Listening to Jenny and Brett this morning the good thing is that it doesnā€™t seem widespread across the state. There are random cases in different places but the community transmission still appears to be family and social gatherings in these areas. Brett also stated today that itā€™s not public settings that have the right controls in place where this virus is spreading, itā€™s in homes

It all comes back to what do you do. In a population of over 5million we have less than 300 active cases and the majority in a specific area. If these people STAY HOME we donā€™t need to worry about them. Testing positive rates are still below 0.2%. The full scale lockdowns that we had were based on a worst case scenario and is not the solution we can just keep jumping back too. Brett said its still at a point where they can manage and trace people.

Localised lockdowns on paper make more sense if an intervention was to happen but are very hard to manage logistically and could encourage people in those areas to stay elsewhere and further spread. Also if the vast majority of people (99.8%) of people in those areas are doing the right thing, getting tested and testing negative why should they be locked down? Given the level of testing in these areas the Victoria Government know the cases, if they then ensure these people do not further spread the virusā€¦ interventions like lockdowns should not be necessary.

NSW dont believe shutting the border is practical - the number of border crossings and shared communities make it difficult

If the NSW and VIC Governments were smart - theyā€™d consider temporarily treating these border communities as single entities

They could have a ā€œpracticalā€ border eg. north of Albury, Moama and Wentworth where there such close cross border communities. And close the backroads to stop people trying to sneak through.

But why? Is there a lot of community transmissions in Albury etc?
