We dont know yet what a second wave looks like (if anything)

The need for the saturated coverage is starting to run its course - its still important that it stays in the news to reinforce the need to continue the measures as applicable in each state, but it doesnt need the coverage that it had a few weeks ago to achieve that.

I think society is just adapting to a Covid 19 world, plus the rioting / protesting around the world has taken precedence this week.

What’s the disadvantage? People shouldn’t care or be concerned about returned travellers. The only “disadvantage” so to speak is that the states have bigger populations so there were always going to be more total number of cases proportionate to the population.

I also think the daily news conferences reporting the total numbers each day is becoming a bit unnecessary. If it is a returned traveller or a known person in a cluster that has isolated it shouldn’t matter. That’s why we have quarantine. The numbers are also pretty stable and certain single cases do not need to be headlines. The daily updates on numbers probably need to scale back and be on a more need to know basis if anything arises of concern. e.g. if any clusters start growing or there is a spike in community transmissions anywhere.

The thing that has frustrated me the most through this whole thing is when they compare us to other countries. Dan Andrew’s in almost every press conference spoke about how “we are the envy of the world” and then would go on about how other countries had it under control and let it slip away from them. It also frustrated me how the Government/media kept comparing to a second wave in Singapore, yet it was only in that second wave that heavy lockdowns happened so it was not a fair comparison to make. Every countries situation has been completely different, especially ours given the lower community transmission rates.

Singapore definitely gets a bad wrap. They have the same deaths per capita as Australia, both on 4 deaths per 1mil population. Not bad considering they are a major transport hub and are very exposed to China. and when i look at their graph i only see one wave.
They also have done more tests than Australia which would impact their case count, and isnt something they should be condemned for.

Chris people who are from other states are mostly arriving through Sydney and Melbourne airports.
They’re currently doing their 2 week quarantine process in both these cities before transporting to the other mainland capitals. If one of these citizens tests positive its recorded under the NSWs or VIC telly.

The lack of deaths in Singapore is likely down to the fact that almost all the clusters of community transmission are all migrant workers, likely to be mostly be in their 20s or 30s at the very oldest.

They’re doing very well considering population density.

My point is that people need to stop focusing on total numbers or really seeing returned travellers as any level of concern. I think we’ve moved well beyond that. It doesn’t matter if a returned traveller adds to Melb or Sydney’s tally. Nobody is making decisions anymore based on total numbers or returned travellers (except for keeping that Quarantine process in place because it’s working). It’s the number of community transmissions and clusters that Governments are making decision on now.

This protest tomorrow in Sydney is going to be a nightmare. The Police have now gone to the Supreme Court to make a call on the lawfulness of the protest given the public health orders. People are just going to turn up in their thousands and then there will be chaos.

I don’t think anyone is though?

You are the one that said that these states are at a disadvantage because of returned traveller numbers. :man_shrugging:

NSW Supreme Court this evening ruled the protest was unlawful.

Let’s hope the police are calm and don’t start man handling people. I hope things stay calm.

Queensland police have said tonight that they don’t intend to arrest or fine anyone at the Brisbane event saying that it’s just not practical. Meanwhile “Hillsong” is trending on Twitter as people compare people attending a Hillsong conference to the protest.

Rallies are being held across Australia this afternoon in defiance of warnings on the spread of COVID-19.

The protesters do have a point, it’s so sad to see where we’ve left our indigenous peoples, here in the bush they overwhelmingly live in poverty surrounded by drugs and crime, it’s hard for them to break out of the cycle. But surely these protests could wait for the pandemic to be over so they don’t put our elderly and the economy at further risk.
