COVID-19 Quarantine Victoria confirmed tonight that there were nine confirmed coronavirus cases linked to the Australian Open, while a possible 10th case was being investigated.

UPDATE 23/1:

The trio, including two men in their 30s and a man in his 50s, are not players, a spokesperson for COVID-19 Quarantine Victoria (CQV) said.

They have been in “hard lockdown” since they landed.

CQV said there were 10 active positive cases linked to the tennis in quarantine, including one new case confirmed today, in a non-player associated with the Australian Open.

The man in his 20s is one of three new cases in quarantine identified today.

I’m sorry she has gotten covid 19 but her whinging about quarantine makes me less sympathetic . These athletes. Think that rules don’t apply to them.

I have a feeling a lot of these players are going to be laughed at.

Tennis players were gradually being released from hotel quarantine from today, a process which won’t finish until Sunday.

So they embrace and then bump elbows

And then socially distance.

Apparently 30,000 spectators will be allowed at the Open per day.

It will only be for the week one of Australian Open. From quarter-finals onwards, crowd capacity will be reduced to 25,000 per day - 12,500 for the day session and 12,500 for the night session.

A lot of comments on social media with people suggesting that this the VIC Government’s way of creating a third wave, going into lockdown and is too early to have such an event with 30,000 spectators.

Comparing mask wearing inside supermarkets, shopping centres etc, border permits to how the Government can allow 30,000 spectators.

Yet I did not hear one complaint about the Boxing Day test crowd capacity - limited to 25,000 per day. No one complained about the Cricket but everyone is complaining about the AusOpen.

I seriously do not understand all the outrage with the AusOpen.

If anything, I would argue the VIC Government is being too cautious and the number of allowed spectators each day should be a bit higher

There has been no outbreaks at sporting events. I don’t really see the issue. It is all outdoors. I don’t see the harm and I think this is just as responsible as crowds at AFL matches when there was 700 cases in Victoria.

Months of daily reporting and scrutiny over the event will do that.

OMG, they’ve stumbled onto Dictator Dan’s secret plan to enslave all Victorians in their homes for a third time!

my question to them is. if the CHO brett Sutton didn’t think this was going to safe and covid safe why did he sign off as this being safe then??? I think you would find a lot these people are whinging just for whining sake and would whing and wine at just about anything dan has done and a lot of these people would be conspiracy theorists

Not that I don’t think it’s safe… but money does talk. One of the biggest revenues to the government, especially in Victoria, is gambling revenue. Sports are vital for this. It is why the government allowed horse racing to continue during the lockdowns. At 0 local transmissions there the risk is low.

RE: public back-lash etc.

Wouldn’t be surprised if many of these comments are coming from tennis-haters (like any sport, there are haters for whatever reasons), let alone non-sports fans, such as political junkies (many of whom may have never even seen or been to a match or know what tennis or any sport is LOL), also people just jumping on the easiest bandwagon at the moment because they can :joy:

Squee’s point is very true.

The only way that Melbourne would have a third wave under these conditions would be a breach of HQ like what caused the second wave. So I do agree with you claiming it’s people hating on Tennis and Dan Andrews haters.

I’m not sure if people are just hating on Dan Andrews. People have criticised other states of having attendances at matches. I remember similar things being said while I was in SA of AFL matches having 30,000 spectators. Same with Sydney recently and the Cricket test.
