COVID-19: Australian Open Saga 🎾

Especially with many ex-Kiwis living here, you’d like to think that a reasonable amount of Australians know that the capital of NZ is Wellington.

No doubt substantially less would know that the Canadian capital is Ottawa - think many Aussies would be surprised to hear there’s a bit more to that country than Toronto and Vancouver!

Was thinking exactly the same thing.

this is from Andrew Lund on Twitter: covid Quarantine Minister lisanevilleMP says there are now ten Covid cases linked to the Australian open three of which will be reported in tomorrow’s figures). One is a player who is likely shedding but that is yet to be confirmed

10/1200 people is a pretty good result given the number of cases in some of the countries these people are coming from. I would have expected more than that.

There was a small argument today on who should foot the bill for player quarantine. Tournament director Craig Tiley said on 3AW this morning that taxpayers would help paying the cost, but it was later dismissed by Victorian police minister Lisa Neville. This afternoon TA confirmed it would fully pay the bill.

It should be the TENNIS PLAYERS that pay for it. Everyone else coming into hotel quarantine is paying. Just because they are famous, it doesn’t apply to them? Bullsh*t. The bill will only cost them a cent.

There most likely wouldn’t be an Australian Open if Tennis Australia didn’t pay for Hotel Quarantine. Nobody’s going to spend 2 weeks locked in a hotel room unless they have a chance to go deep in the tournament.

Saw a ticker on BBC World

“Australian Open players in quarantine told not to feed the mice.”

Do you think that every person in the entertainment industry or other industries that has come (or are coming) to Australia are paying for their own quarantine? No. The production companies or employers would be. How is this any different? Tennis Australia has agreed to pay for Hotel Quarantine with this event and that is completely their call. This event is huge for jobs and the economy so they obviously wanted the best chance to lure as many big players down to put on the best event possible.

I won’t speak for others, but the bit that outraged me was the suggestion that taxpayers would be covering the cost for these very wealthy queue-jumping celebrities, while ordinary people are being forced to pay for mandatory hotel quarantine, in many cases after already having to spend $10 000s to get eventually back to Australia after many months of repeated flight cancellations because of Morrison’s arrival caps & his failure to live up to the federal government responsibility for quarantine.

Tennis Australia have confirmed that they are funding the Hotel Quarantine program, not the Victorian Government or the taxpayer. So it’s time to get over your outrage and move on from that debate.

Regardless, the economical benefits of this event to Victoria is HUGE.

The arrogance of that Tennis boss is off the charts. Probably thought he could play it out with the media.

Tennis Australia stated in their 2020/2021 annual report that

I’m assuming that line-of-credit has been established and that Tennis Australia are using it. The company had reserves including cash, investments and securities of $80 million as at 30 September 2020.

One of the Spanish players who was on the Abu Dhabi flight now has COVID-19.

This just shows why hard quarantine is necessary. Imagine if they weren’t deemed close contacts and were allowed to continue on with their preparation. Many would probably have been exposed. The authorities have done the right thing.

Victorian chief health officer Brett Sutton said those who get COVID-19 in quarantine will have isolation period restarted. That means tennis players who are diagnosed with the virus while in the quarantine system may not be able to leave the hotel when the rest of the players do.
