COVID-19: Australian Open Saga šŸŽ¾

I actually think cats in quarantine arenā€™t a bad idea.

Chadstone Shopping Centre probably has more people step through itā€™s doors per day on the weekends than will at the Australian Open per day. At least the Australian Open is outdoors and a ticketed, traceable and socially distanced event.

Keep in mind too that the 30,000 spectators per day are split into two sessions (day and night) plus the day/night sessions are split across 3 sections. Which by my maths means around 5,000 in each arena (or section of the grounds) at a time. I really donā€™t understand the uproar when Cricket had 25,000 attend in one pop (which might I add even had a positive case attend but caused no further transmission it seems).

I am very much looking forward to attending next week and I have no concerns given the spacing between our groups and others which was shown when purchasing the tickets, I feel like this event has been planned out very well given the circumstances.

Attended on/off from 1997 to 2010, went every year from 2011 to 2019, missed last year (regrettably) and still considering this year (but looking doubtful with crowd caps/ticket sell-outs).

this is from the vicgov dh media statement for today
Update: Indeterminant test result

An indeterminant result was detected on Saturday from a man in his 30s. Following a review of clinical, epidemiological and testing evidence, this case has been rejected and deemed negative.

What does this have to do with the Australian Open? Was it a player?

How long do close contacts need to isolate?

Once they get a negative result. They will most likely be out of action for a day.

Media conference.

No games today. Tomorrowā€™s schedule to be released tonight for release of matches for lead up tournaments but formats and scores may have to be adjusted. Players who werenā€™t at the hotel can train.

AO to still start Monday.

The Victorian government has clarified tennis fans will be required to wear a mask when the roof is closed on the main arenas during the Australian Open.

It applies to the main courts of Rod Laver Arena, Margaret Court Arena and John Cain Arena.

ā€œThese venues are deemed to be indoor spaces under the restrictions and masks use is required by all spectators and officials,ā€ a government spokesman said.

Spectators can remove masks when the roof is open, while players are exempt from the rule.

Perhaps that will keep people quite during serves

If they want to bitch and whinge about wearing a mask, then kick them out of the open. Theyā€™re lucky itā€™s even going ahead, with or without spectators.

So thatā€™s only IF roofs are closed. Hopefully very few times that needs to happen.

A big twist to this saga: Victoria will go into a lockdown from 11.59pm AEDT tonight to 11.59pm next Wednesday. That means no crowds at the Australian Open for the next five days.
