Much better.

88.9fm (2YOU) Tamworth & Liverpool Plains Shire Council has signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the commencement of broadcast services for Quirindi & the Liverpool Plains Shire.

It will commence broadcasting on 96.3 MHz in coming weeks after infrastructure has been completed & tested.

I wonder how much it’ll get smashed by Triple J Taree?

In a straight line I think Quirindai is closer to Middle Brother than Gosford is?

From Quirindi, Middle Brother is approx 192km away, whilst Mt Penang (Coast FM TX) is approx 218km away.

By comparison, the distance from Middle Brother to Mt Penang is 229km.

Don’t forget 94.7 is co-channelled already (JJJ Tamworth/NewsRadio Taree)- though NewsRadio is easily the weakest out of Middle Bro.

The ERPs are as follows:

94.7
JJJ Tamworth - 10kW
NewsRadio Taree - 5kW

96.3
2YOU Quirindi - 150 watts
JJJ Taree - 100kW (towards Quirindi)

Remains to be seen I guess.
It’s 195km between the the tx sites.
There’s a 1324m high mountain range 47km to the east of Quirindi & both sites on 500m+ high hills. Quirindi sits down at 380m with hills around, so might be down in a VHF RF shadow under normal propagation conditions protected from Middle Brother FM txions (If I were to ignore signal refraction)?
Others more familiar with the place might be able to add further comment.

I was using Google Earth (Path) to look at the elevation profile between the sites.

This is very much needed. 88.9 is terrible down in Quirindi.

What will they call the Quirindi station? Given the Tamworth station’s name is its frequency.

Who’d A Thought It?

Don’t think that will worry them. Plenty of frequency only stations have relays. I guess the announcer every so often will announce the Quirindi frequency periodically.

Yes the terrain will save it in this case. Co-channel between Manning River and Gosford will remain a bigger issue than with Quirindi despite being slightly further apart. I’ve found it very rare that Tamworth signals make it east to the coast. And I wasn’t able to DX Middle Brother or Moombil from Tamworth when I was there last year either.

Back on that very hot weekend we had at the end of January, I was JUST able to get 88.9 and 92.9 Tamworth from Myall Lakes with inland tropo present. It was very weak though, infact Real FM Mudgee was coming in better than 92.9 was. Admittedly, ABC Sydney didn’t help 92.9. Excluding 91.7 occasionally getting into Western Sydney, it’s the first time I’ve ever got Tamworth east of the Great Divide.

So it was 2kW but now is 100w? Much higher site or tower?

I would think the Taree ERP is less west as the main beam of that antenna is up and down the coast.

Not intended for Quirindi on its current setup of location and power I’d say.

Very funny @dxnerd, love it!

As someone who used to DX around the North West region I can tell you the only regular coastal signal you can receive on Who’d a thorght it lookout is Newcastle. I’ve never got anything from Middle Brother in the Tamworth region

It’d be unlikely I agree as the main ERP is up and down the coast.

Look at the FM services on http://reception.abc.net.au/ from Middle Brother. You can compare the lower ERP of News Radio with the others, all north/south. Not much west.

Would need a short skip or tropo but long range semi permanent reception is unlikely.

I agree that the topography should protect 96.3 in Quirindi.

And @thesub1 re the use of the frequency as the station name, they could do a lot worse than go back to being IDd as 2YOU as they did back when they used to be on 95.5 FM.

I don’t think that will happen as the new board wanted to distance itself from what 2YOU FM used to be. Whilst I’ve been in commercial radio for 25 years now prior to that I once was rock coordinator and Board member of the old 2YOU FM back in the day

I see that 88.9 is trying to be a quasi commercial station playing older music when 2TM is talkback. But what was it prior to that?

2SER’s antenna/transmitter was struck by lightning last Friday.
They are currently struggling with their either damaged transmitter or replacement.
The audio is horrible & transmitter is off frequency.

The station is advising listeners to listen online or via DAB+
