Could’ve been an issue with the FTP server they’re using and the 2023 news bulletin was just cached… or they had some local fallback download from the FTP server and the cronjob failed, since 2023…
94.1 FM on the Gold Coast is moving studios from Bundall to Mermaid Beach. They will be moving into a floor of the local council’s Mermaid Beach Community Centre.
What they need to do is make the licence permanent, BUT find another frequency as a trade off. 94.1 should be then allocated to Brisbane for either the ABC or auction based AM conversion or new licence. It’s one of the last hopes for a new Brisbane-wide FM frequency. I guarantee they’d be able to slot in the permanent community licence on the Gold Coast somewhere else on the band, at a 0.4 spacing from Brisbane, like they have with Juice (107.3) and Metro (105.7)
As far as I am concerned the station should be shut down completely, basically running a commercial format on a community licence for one thing, and the disastrous and complete mismanagement behind the scenes, and ontop of that the station manager borrowing money from a friend of mine, who at the time was on the board, taking the money and then never paying it back, then kicking him off the board.
Yeah I say remove the station altogether and let Brisbane have a full power one for the ABC. Or better yet maybe let the Gold Coast have its 4th Commercial licence!
I see 94.1 either being ABCLR Brisbane, community station Switch Brisbane or a Smooth/Heart/Gold station (if Nova sell their 97.3 stake for the 94.1 licence hypothetically)
It won’t be a new commercial station because then you’d have to auction off a new license in Sydney and Melbourne (and probably Perth), which won’t happen.
It would either be an ABC conversion or a commercial AM to FM conversion but I think that is as likely as Angus Taylor becoming the next Prime Minister.
Given the ACMA’s absolute reluctance to rock the boat over in Perth by granting the AMs an FM conversion, there’s zero chance they’d open up 94.1 for a new commercial player in Brisbane/GC against the wishes of the incumbents (as much as Brisbane absolutely should have another commercial FM given its population).
94.1 for ABC Brisbane sounds good, although you’d have to shift Cherbourg to allow it to be any higher power to the north.
In reality, the stalemate of 94.1 filling out their paperwork each year and allowing ACMA to keep kicking the can down the road probably suits both parties just fine, at the expense of all others.
This week, I’ve been sampling community radio stations at random using:
Monday: Hamilton Island. Stations: Island FM (LPON) & Gem FM Bowen. Both stations had automation, but the music mix on Island FM (Airlie Beach) is superb.
Tuesday: Katoomba. Station: 2BLU FM. ‘Paul’s Boutique’ playing some obscure stuff off vinyl including ‘way too cool for Billy Bob’ rare grooves and funk. The highlight for me being ‘Red Rain’ by Peter Gabriel.
Wednesday: Bundaberg: Station: 4GGO Gin Gin (94.7 had Greek music on). Good mix so far.
I’m tuning in roughly from around 5 PM to 7 PM, to get an idea of what others are doing in the community radio space. Some great songs have been heard so far, the latest of which being a ‘Space Race’/’Space Invaders’ double play on 4GGO Gin Gin.
