Community Radio

That’s pretty cool. I didn’t even know Gin Gin had their own community station!

It’s Gin Gin’s Own you know

Unfortunately the stream conked out just now and right in the middle of ‘Hungry Town’ by Big Pig at that. Thankfully 94.7 is now playing more mainstream music.

4GGO’s stream is fed directly from a tuner…at times it was totally smashed by electrical interference.

I first knew about 4GGO when we received it via Es in Cooma one summer (or maybe it was Numeralla).

Are you sure it’s on 94.7? I had thought that was Bundaberg’s Coral Coast community station? Although I thought they had gone off air at least for a while.

Did a quick search and the websites seem to indicate 4GGO is 104.9?

Yes, 4GGO is 104.9. I had to switch back to 94.7 (Coral Coast) after GGO’s stream went belly up. Apologies for the lack of clarity.

Ah, right.

So is the PM’s message tonight really going out on all radio stations? Including community ones?

Not all radio, but it is being provided via the Community Radio Network satellite, so stations can take it if they choose.

I noticed today that 2BBB’s 93.3 service is still on the air. However I am unsure if they have been given a stay of execution regarding the Francis Lookout site, but I do notice that they have an alternate site to transmit from. Water Towers in Casuarina Street in Dorrigo. Nothing has been mentioned on their socials or website about a new site as yet.

Using the maprad site, I have generated coverage maps of the new site and the old site.

New site.

Old site.

The old site appears to be far superior in terms of coverage.

Looks like that will be the end of DXing it from here then.

Just an update, I can confirm that 2BBB is still transmitting from Francis Lookout at Dorrigo. They have been given an extension to stay up there. For how long, I’m not sure. I’m not involved with 2BBB anymore in terms of presenting but this information was confirmed by someone from the station.

This is unfortunate, but we can look at another example to see what could happen - Radio Adelaide used to be owned by the uni, and when they wanted to offload it, it was spun off into a standalone entity.

Yeah, I doubt 2SER will go dark entirely, but you never know in the current climate. It’s no 3RRR or 3PBS that’s for sure, but it still has a good level of support.
