The theory of a slowing jetstream in the Northern Hemisphere has been around a good while in climate change circles. It may also be behind the severe winter cold snaps (âpolar vorticesâ), particularly in North America (North America has a favourable geography to âbendâ the jet stream, mainly around the Rocky Mountains).
The Southern Hemisphere is very different, with the Antarctic actually warming slower in places than more temperate latitudes. This is because the Southern Ocean acts a buffer, stopping warm air reaching Antarctica. The result is a stronger jetstream (the temp gradient between the temperate latitudes and the Antarctic is increasing) and fewer cold outbreaks in Australia/NZ/South Africa. This is exactly what we have been seeing in the last 20 years. Cold air is trapped in a strong vortex around Antarctica with minimal northward penetration.
The NH has land all around the pole so warmer air can move freely up to the Arctic (and cold air down to the temperate latitudes). The heat exchange is much more efficient.
Shows the true colours of the Federal government to focus on campaigning to stop the reef being listed as âin dangerâ as opposed to tackling the root causes that are putting it on the list in the first place.
Imagine if instead of going after drug traffickers, the police instead focused on hushing up the fact that there even is a drug problem.
Canberra forecast for Sunday from BOM:
Weâve had two snow falls in the suburbs in the last week, last Saturday morning and again on Tuesday night, neither of which were forecast by BOM, so will be interesting to see what tomorrow brings.
Normally itâs the one that the BOM actually forecasts that doesnât happen
We had two significant rain events recently that caused mild flash flooding in Perth unforecasted by BOM, then they forecast one and dial up the warnings and the showers ended up scattered / isolated throughout the day.
Highest tides forecast for areas of Tasmania since 1994 causing some inundation in areas - a combination of the lows passing across, the full moon and the usual tide patterns. Also snow forecast to 400m tomorrow so will likely affect several of the highways.
You can have SNOW 24/7 in Canberra - on your digital radio
My brother report light snow in the morning from the Belconnen area. It wasnât much.

Interesting possible snow in WA? I wonder where it has snowed in Western Australia. (other than Bluff Knoll) Something for me to google.
Edit:
Here is an article on that topic.
Nine still downplaying it.
Our climate has already become more extreme, and it is only getting worse.
Meanwhile Morrisonâs Emissions Reduction Minister is hiding from the media, refusing interview requests. Does he think someone will actually ask him if heâs failed at his job?
Typical Morrison. He seems to think carbon emissions and fossil fuels is the only way of life.
It says a lot about him that even Boris Johnson knows that drastic actions need to be taken.
No one really is surprised about Scomo considering heâs mates with Trump.
I will be amazed if he wins re-election I just can see how people can vote for him again after how bad its been from his handling of the Bush fires in 19/20, COVID and his reluctance to do anything other than the bare minimum in regards to climate change.
I wonât, because there are far too many idiots in Australia.
