Climate, Weather and Emergencies

I got a shock when I saw our upcoming forecast, both Thursday and Saturday are forecast for 27 degrees which is quite rare in itself but even rarer in April where the record high temperature has only been 24.9°C.

Not really, March is hotter than December on average in Perth.
The maximum of 39 (and over 40 in many areas) was a bit out of the ordinary for this late in the month though.

I hope the winter in Perth this year will be wet, wet and bit stormy rather than dry.

Perth is hot in March (and even April) due to the southerly location of high pressure systems, the back end of which produce very hot easterly winds. The sea surface temperatures are also at their warmest, limiting the strength and effectiveness of the Freo Doctor. You really need cold fronts to clear the heat in Perth and they don’t usually show up till the second half of autumn.

These highs also produce easterly winds on the east coast, but of course they are coming off water rather than land. Melbourne and Adelaide can get a bit warm with these easterlies but not to the extent of Perth.

Some of the heat will make its way east over Easter as ando mentioned. Indian Summers like this are increasingly common. Canberra is looking at a run of days in the high 20s. Meanwhile it was 2C here this morning.

The NT doesn’t need it at all. The Territory thrives in the middle of the year due to dry weather and cooler conditions but during the wet season no events are held - including local markets. Therefore introducing daylight savings at the same time as the other states is completely pointless and won’t be effective.

The average sunset/sunrise times in Darwin etc remain the same all year around due to it’s location as-well.

Daylight saving is most useful between 30S and 60S (the temperate zone). North of 30S you’re generally praying for the sun to go down in summer, and in the tropics day length doesn’t vary too much at all as mentioned. Below 60s (Antarctica), the summer days are long enough anyway

The optimal zone for DST is probably at Tasmania’s latitudes (40-45S). Tasmania has a generally mild summer with long evenings that can be enjoyed.

Most useful perhaps, but I think it’d work fine somewhat further north too, certainly SE Qld.

With the hot weather which came through over Easter we’ve had some pretty good conditions in Tassie. A few records broken too with Hobart reaching 32.3 degrees on Good Friday which was their hottest April day on record - the old record was 31.0°C.

The forecast models are indicating that Seroja will cross the WA coast quite far south early next week - currently the estimate is between Geraldton and Kalbarri.

I would prefer to see them do The Macarena.

Or the Adriana.

Those cyclones may also keep the heat going in eastern WA; Kalgoorlie has been roasting for over a week. But you don’t hear much about it in the media which is all about Sydney weather.

Cyclones tend to draw down hot air on their eastern flank.

Meanwhile I think we’ll have the first hard frost of the season next week. The VIC Alps may even see a sprinkle of snow.

Looks chilli next week at Braidwood down to zero Monday, make sure you pack woolies when you make your trip down to Braidwood on Tuesday.

Even in my neck of woods in the tropical hills district of Sydney it will go down to 8 degrees.

Warm humid days have been relentless in Perth for most of the last couple weeks - the drizzle and cloud cover hasn’t helped at all. While the cyclones may not be directly responsible for this the weather pattern has been very noticeably humid over the last 6 weeks, compared to the earlier part of summer which was dry and windy.

Bungendore is just as cold- if not colder- than Braidwood for minimum temperatures. Braidwood is only cooler for warm season maximums.

I am expecting a frost here on Monday morning. Just hope wind doesn’t spoil it.
